Former boxing champion Celestino Caballero has been arrested in Panama with approximately 10 kilograms of cocaine.
A former IBF and WBA super-bantamweight champion has been arrested in Panama with what is believed to be 10 kilograms of cocaine.
Celestino Caballero, 39, was detained by Panama Police on Thursday while on his way to his native province of Colon,. The authorities discovered ten packets of cocaine in the vehicle. Each weighed approximately 1kg.
The packets were taken for testing to confirm the contents.
The retired boxer could face up to eight to 12 years in prison but will likely earn a reduced sentence following his confession.
“My client admitted guilt and expressed remorse at the fact that he had committed a crime, and promised never again not to do.” Caballero’s lawyer, Victor Caballero Orobie told the media.
Caballero compiled a 37-6 record throughout his impressive career and became the IBF and WBA super-bantamweight champion. He ruled over his division between 2006-10 and earned 24 knockouts in the process. He eventually retired in 2014.
