25-year-old Glyan Alves did not survive his bullet wounds and passed away last Wednesday in Brazil.
In the middle of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, a promising MMA fighter fell victim to Brazil’s street violence.
Per Globo Esporte’s report, former JF Fight bantamweight champion and former Shooto Brasil titleholder Glyan Alves was gunned down in Juiz de Fora, a city in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. According to the police, Alves was hit in the waist and in the leg and taken to the hospital, but did not survive. So far, there are no leads on suspects or motives for Alves’ death.
Owner of a 13-5 record, Glyan Alves was on a two-fight losing skid in 2019. Prior to that, the 25-year-old was on a five-fight winning streak, with four knockout wins and one unanimous decision. Overall, Glyan had eight knockout wins, one submission and four decisions in his professional record.
Shooto Brasil’s official Instagram account left a heartfelt tribute to Alves, comforting his family and friends, and lamenting the loss of a young, promising athlete.
“Former Shooto Brasil bantamweight champion Glyan Alves passed away this Wednesday (18), at 25, in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Glyan was hit by three gunshots. The circumstances of his death have not been cleared up yet. We leave here our tribute and our sincere condolences to Glyan’s family. He was a young, promising, young man, who still had many accomplishments ahead of him. We lost a great athlete.”
