It seems that after having to face two former opponents twice for the UFC lightweight title, former champ Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar (14-2-1) has earned the right to rematch for the belt he lost to former WEC champ Ben ‘Smooth’ Henderson (16-2) last month in Japan.
UFC president Dana White made the announcement Tuesday night on Twitter (@DanaWhite).
– Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson rematch will be this summer
Edgar himself was pretty excited by the rematch Tweeting (@FrankieEdgar) his own message about the fight.
– Rematch anyone??…….it’s on!! Thanks to @danawhite @lorenzofertitta. Me and Henderson 2. Here we go!!
Both men met a couple of weekends ago in Japan in the main event of UFC 144. Both men would battle for five rounds with scores of 49-46, 48-47, and 49-46 going to the winner. This time instead of Edgar holding onto the title, a new champ was crowned in Henderson.
Fans should expect another exciting rematch with both men earning the “Fight of the Night” honor.
The rematch was not the announcement many had expected from the UFC president, as White had indicated after their UFC 144 bout that Anthony Pettis would likely be the one to fight for the title next after ‘Showtime’s’ quick win over Joe Lauzon. As well, he had also insisted that Edgar drop to featherweight for an instant title shot versus champ Jose Aldo.
It seems that Edgar’s camp convinced White otherwise.
No word yet on when that rematch may take place.
