Looks like Donald Cerrone will be playing the role of underdog yet again.
Cerrone, who is coming off a disappointing TKO loss to Tony Ferguson this past June, is currently scheduled to fight lightweight destroyer Justin Gaethje this September at UFC on ESPN+ 16 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The fight was just announced earlier this week.
Leaving little time to waste, oddsmakers have already released the betting lines for the tantalizing main event matchup. According to our friends over at Bet Online, Gaethje has opened up as a big -250 favorite, meaning you must bet $250 on “Highlight” to win just $100.
Cerrone, on the other hand, has opened up as a +210 underdog, meaning a $100 bet would net you $210 for a “Cowboy” victory.
These odds may come as a bit of a surprise given Cerrone’s knack for pulling off upsets and performing best when the chips are stacked against him, but the oddsmakers know exactly what they’re doing. Taking into account that Gaethje has quickly become a more patient fighter en route to two consecutive first-round knockout finishes, it makes sense to have the surging lightweight contender ahead of Cerrone.
That said, these odds are certainly subject to change. With two months left until the prolific lightweights actually lock horns there’s a really good chance that “Cowboy” closes the gap leading into his bout with Gaethje.
