Gegard Mousasi and Chris Weidman—two of the top middleweights in the UFC or anywhere else—could soon lock horns. That is, if Weidman gets his act in gear and signs on the dotted line (metaphorical use; line may not be dotted).
That’s the scenario portrayed by Mousasi, who tweeted Tuesday that Weidman had been offered the fight “days ago” and that the former middleweight champ had “disappeared” now that the time to make things official has arrived.
“Accept the fight already,” Mousasi tweeted. “I am waiting, Pal.”
According to the official UFC rankings, Weidman and Mousasi are ranked as the fourth- and fifth-best middleweights, respectively, in the promotion.
The 32-year-old Weidman (13-2) has dropped two straight, although both were to elite contenders and champions. In December 2015, Weidman lost in the fourth round by TKO to Luke Rockhold, and in so doing relinquished the middleweight title he had held for the past two years.
In November, Weidman dropped his second straight contest when Yoel Romero knocked him out at UFC 205 in New York City.
Weidman, a talented wrestler and ground-and-pound artist, also has been affected by injuries throughout his career. Most recently, Weidman had neck surgery over the summer. It is unclear whether or to what extent that neck problem or any other health problem is hampering Weidman’s ability to accept a new fight.
In contrast, Mousasi (41-6-2) may be on the best streak of his career. Despite a load of talent, the 31-year-old Dutchman was inconsistent at the beginning of his stint with the UFC, which began in 2013. After Uriah Hall knocked him out with a spectacular spinning back kick in September 2015, Mousasi went on a tear, handling Thales Leites, Thiago Santos and Vitor Belfort before gaining his revenge on Hall with a TKO in November.
Although no bout or bout discussion has been announced outside of Mousasi’s tweet, which is obviously unofficial, it stands to reason that a winner between Mousasi and Weidman would be well-positioned for a shot at champion Michael Bisping, or whoever might be holding the title at that time.
