Gegard Mousasi accused the last fighter to beat him of PED use.
Gegard Mousasi recently lost his Bellator middleweight title after dropping a decision to Rafael Lovato Jr. The long time MMA vet also accused his opponent of PED use, with Mousasi requesting for additional testing prior to the bout.
“I should have won this match even with him using PEDs,” Mousasi told Vechtersbazen Podcast, and translated by MMA Junkie. “I told the commission that it’s clear that he was on PEDs,” Mousasi said. “(The commissioner) gave me a pat on the shoulder and told me that he was going to get tested on fight day and walked away.
“I have also sent Scott Coker a text, because I saw a picture of (Lovato Jr.) that did not look natural,” Mousasi said. “He told me that he would get back at me and call me. I didn’t hear anything back.”
Mousasi also spoke about his next bout, while talking about performance enhancing drugs.
“If the rematch (with Lovato Jr.) isn’t coming, Machida will probably be next. Another PED user,” he said. “Brazilians are known for using PEDs. Americans, too, but especially Brazilians.”
Mike Mazzulli, who was overseeing commission activities for Bellator 223, also confirmed that Lovato was tested on the day of the fight and that he passed his urine test.
As many you may know though, passing a drug test on a day a fighter knows that he or she will be tested doesn’t necessarily mean that fighter is 100% clean. Even with much more stringent testing protocols in place like in the UFC, numerous fighters still attempt to cheat (and manage to pass many random USADA tests).
With what Mousasi has seen in his long career, and having competed against numerous fighters linked to PEDs and failed tests, it is understandable that he is more suspicious and skeptical of other fighters these days. That being said, Lovato has never failed a drug test in his career.
