Georges St-Pierre has confirmed that he is currently negotiating with the UFC, but sponsorship could be one of the major hurdles they have to agree upon.
Long time welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre has recently confirmed that he indeed is in negotiations with the UFC. While doing the rounds with the media, in part to promote his upcoming TV show about paleontology and dinosaurs, he did share more details on the discussions for his return.
“I am not able to tell you a scoop, if there is any news it is the UFC that will decide to release it,” St-Pierre told RDS in French, and translated by Bloody Elbow’s John Nash. “I can say that I am on good terms with them. But we sometimes do not agree on some things.”
According to the French Canadian outlet, sponsorship is “currently one of the main points of dispute, whereas before, it was the quality of drug testing that was the subject of the friction between the two parties. The UFC banned athletes from wearing on their jerseys any logos other than that Reebok with a few exceptions, such as Monster energy drink.”
Although he didn’t reveal specifics, this seems to be one of the biggest sticking points for the dominant welterweight champion.
“There are many things, but I won’t go into detail,” St-Pierre said. “My contract is very old. It was done even before Reebok entered the UFC, so there are several things that come into play.”
St-Pierre also went on to state that a potential return doesn’t necessarily have to happen at the upcoming milestone event in UFC 200 this July.
“Doesn’t need to be 200,” he said. “I know it will have Conor McGregor who will be fighting against Nate Diaz, and with that they will already have a good card.”
“We will see what will happen, but again, there are things I cannot say. It depends on the plans of my agents and the UFC, We will see what is best for us and for them.”
Despite rumors, and even his coach asking for a bout against Diaz, St-Pierre still maintains that he attended UFC 196 not to challenge the winner, but to just have fun with his friends.
