Georges St-Pierre won’t fight ‘dangerous’ BJ Penn because it’s too risky for his UFC legacy

If Georges St-Pierre is going to accept a fight that does nothing for his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) legacy, then it better be a walk in the park. Otherwise, don’t expect him to “Rush” into anything foolish, like a rubber match with former nemesis B.J. Penn.

Which “The Prodigy” wanted to contest at lightweight.

“I fought him two times and for me I don’t see any good for me to come back and fight him,” St-Pierre told MMA Fighting. “If I fight against B.J. right now — he’s an amazing fighter — if I win, I don’t elevate myself more. If B.J. wins on the other hand, now it elevates him.”

St-Pierre teased a drop to 155 pounds back in July.

“It’s an unnecessary risk for my legacy, for my career to take to fight a guy like him right now,” he continued. “It has nothing that will be good for me right now. I think he’s very dangerous. If it would be a walk in the park, I would do it.”

Seemed like a walk in the park their last time out, but that’s just me.

Penn is expected to make his featherweight debut against Ricardo Lamas at UFC Fight Night 97 next month in Manila (more on that card here). St-Pierre, meanwhile, is flirting with a Tyron Woodley title fight at UFC 206 later this year in Toronto.

Assuming these guys can pick up the phone.
