Globo, sponsors support Anderson Silva despite failed UFC 183 drug test

UFC star Anderson Silva failed a drug test prior to his UFC 183 win over Nick Diaz, but he’s still getting the support from his sponsors in Brazil.

Silva, who was already slated to coach the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil alongside with former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua prior to his win over Diaz, was kept on the reality show despite getting busted for steroids.

UFC president Dana White announced Wednesday that Silva will “gets his due process” and “while this process plays out, Anderson will continue in his role as coach of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil.” And the UFC hasn’t made that decision alone.

Rede Globo, which has a multimillionaire contract with the UFC and broadcasts TUF: Brazil, has issued the following statement to MMAFighting.com.

“Keep Anderson on TUF, until all the results are released and the Nevada State Athletic Commission has made its decision, it was a decision made in agreement with the UFC.”

Silva’s sponsors won’t cut ties with the fighter until all the results are back. However, one of the companies that appeared on Silva’s banner on fight night denied sponsoring him.

Brazilian soccer team Corinthians told MMAFighting.com they haven’t sponsored Silva since November of 2014, but the fighter chose to put the Corinthians logo in his banner anyway. Though they appreciate the exposure, the club doesn’t have anything to do with it. In regards to his failed test, they won’t comment before all the results are released.

In November, Silva was named one of the ambassadors of Furnas’ social program, Furnas Educa. Furnas, a gigantic energy company from Brazil, says that their relationship with the fighter is not about sponsorship.

“Furnas does not sponsor the fighter Anderson Silva,” read the statement sent to MMAFighting.com. “The company has an agreement to use the fighter’s image after he was named Furnas Educa’s ambassador.”

Silva’s one-year deal with Furnas is worth R$ 240,000 (roughly $90,000), but could be terminated if any of the parts involved decides to.

“The agreement has a dissolution clause that can be exercised at any time by either party. However, Furnas has confidence in the athlete, who is considered an example of overcoming, and will wait for his defense and the tests before making any decision.”

Budweiser, one of Silva’s long-time sponsors, told MMAfighting.com they won’t comment on his failed UFC 183 drug test at this moment.

Hotel Urbano, that announced a sponsorship deal with the former UFC middleweight fighter two days before his fight with Diaz, will continue to support the Brazilian star. Here’s the statement sent to MMAFighting.com.

The UFC’s official travel agency and sponsor of Anderson Silva’s return to the biggest mixed martial arts competition in the world, Hotel Urbano will continue to support the athlete the best way possible at this moment.

Hotel Urbano believes in the integrity and professionalism of the fighter and believes that this episode will be cleared as soon as possible.

Owner of an exemplary career, Anderson Silva is an idol of Brazilian sport and considered by many the greatest fighter in MMA history.

Do Bem, Viber and Sports Arena, the other three companies that sponsored Silva at UFC 183, did not respond to a request for comment.
