Georges St-Pierre is still willing to compete in “almost two years,” when his UFC contract finally expires.
Two months ago, it was revealed that the UFC blocked a supposed boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and retired former champion Georges St-Pierre. As it turned out, GSP’s contract had been frozen, which allowed the company the veto power over any of his prizefighting-related plans outside the Octagon.
What was never brought to light was how much longer St-Pierre would be under contract with the UFC. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, he finally gave an answer.
“My contract with UFC will finish in almost two years, and I will be free—and I will still be in shape.
“I’m still a fighter and an entertainer. If there is an exhibition fight or a novelty fight for charity, then never say never,” said St-Pierre, who will be 42 around the time his contract lapses.
Many who weren’t aware of St-Pierre’s lingering contract situation with his former employer apparently urged him to take legal action. But St-Pierre, the classy individual that he is, deemed it unnecessary.
“Trust me, if this fight would have happened, I would have moved to Los Angeles to [famed boxing trainer] Freddie Roach’s gym and made a full training camp, leaving no stone unturned,” he said. “Unfortunately, Dana White didn’t want it.
“It is what it is. I can’t be mad at him. People have said to take him to court, but that makes me look like the bad guy, and I don’t want to spend money on lawyers and all that.”
After a four-year hiatus beginning in 2013, St-Pierre signed a new contract with the UFC in 2017. He ended up taking that only fight against Michael Bisping that year before retiring in 2019.
