Big Sweden?

Fight Island? More like Easter Island for Alexander Gustafsson.

The former light heavyweight title contender, who turned 33 earlier this year, is abandoning his post at 205 pounds to try his luck in the heavyweight division, and it appears he’ll be cornered by Manny, Moe, and Jack.

Listen, it’s a slow week, I’m just trying to survive over here.

“I’m pretty big at light heavyweight and I always have to cut 15-17 kilos every fight,” Gustafsson told MMA Viking. “So I just wanted to challenge myself a little bit. I’m eating pasta now, I’m feeling good, I weigh 107 kilos. I never felt so strong. I’m still keeping my skills as a light heavyweight but I’m just feeling stronger.”

Gustafsson (18-6) briefly retired from MMA after his submission loss to Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night 153 back in June 2019. “The Mauler” holds wins over Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira, among others, and at one point was considered the third-best fighter at 205 pounds behind Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

The 6’4” Swede battles former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum at the upcoming UFC Fight Night “Whittaker vs. Till” event on Sat., July 25, 2020 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
