Cynthia Calvillo made her presence known within the women’s flyweight division last night (Sat., June 13, 2020) at UFC on ESPN 10 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, defeating No. 1-ranked Jessica Eye with a dominant unanimous decision win.
Calvillo seemed to land the bigger shots in Round 1, although Eye stood in the pocket and winged counter shots when she could. Eye was also the one who scored the better jabs while controlling the center of the cage.
Calvillo scored some good shots early into the second before securing the fight’s first takedown along the cage. Eye played it well and defended the arms to eventually get back to her feet, but Calvillo was there to sink in hooks and take Eye’s back. Calvillo didn’t land serious damage but she maintained control and found a home for some short punches.
In the third, Eye relied heavily on her jab to keep Calvillo at range, but Calvillo was able to sneak her way inside and land solid punches in bunches. Eye was able to find a home for a big right hand before Calvillo secured another timely takedown. From there, Calvillo would beat Eye with more pesky punches to the head.
The fourth frame saw Calvillo land yet another takedown with over four minutes to work. Eye did well to defend any submission attempt, but Calvillo was a backpack, sticking to “Evil” and sapping all of her energy. Eye would eventually get back to her feet with just over a minute to spare and ended up landing some solid punches on Calvillo, who seemed a little tired herself.
Eye tried to come out hot in the fifth but Calvillo checked her with a stiff right hand. Both women exchanged more strikes in the center of the cage while Calvillo’s shots seemed to pack a little more steam. Calvillo was still faster and harder to hit than Eye, despite being so deep into the fight. Eye was able to land a final big right hand, but Calvillo ate it and secured the definitive takedown.
