Veteran fighter Cortney Casey scored one of the biggest wins of her MMA career earlier tonight (Sat., May 16, 2020) at UFC on ESPN 8 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., when she locked down a first-round submission (armbar) over flyweight mainstay Mara Romero Borella.
Borella was the more physical fighter out of the gate and ended up scoring a takedown along the cage. Casey fought well but was giving up valuable top time to her Italian counterpart. Out of nowhere, Casey was able to throw up a tight armbar attempt that had Borella in trouble. A few hammer fists from Casey softened up Borella’s defense and eventually forced the tap, which couldn’t come sooner as Borella started to scream in pain.

With this performance, Casey makes good on her UFC flyweight debut and gets her first Octagon finish since a submission win over Randa Markos at UFC 202. The 33-year-old Casey will look to stay at 125 pounds moving forward as she attempts to win back-to-back fights for the first time since 2016.
