It was all Colby Covington last night (Sat., Sept. 19, 2020) at UFC Vegas 11 live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the welterweight contender dominated former champion Tyron Woodley in a lopsided main event grudge match.
Covington struck first with an early takedown and subsequent ground-and-pound, but Woodley defended nicely and returned to his feet. Once there, “Chosen One” was able to land much of anything ad Covington backed him into the cage and scored punches and elbows.
In Round 2, Covington started to land more punches from range. “Chaos” even mixed in a flying knee and seemed to catch Woodley against the fence. Covington kept busy with high volume and constant chest-to-chest pressure, but Woodley did threaten with a guillotine choke halfway through the round.
The third round saw Covington score offense with heavy kicks to the body. Woodley would occasionally mix in some uppercuts or reaching hooks, but “Chaos” offered sound head movement and footwork to avoid. Covington eventually went back to his grinding style along the cage and landed small shots and elbows in the clinch.
The fourth round saw more pressure by Covington along the cage and worked his way for another takedown. From there, “Chaos” controlled Woodley and started to land short punches from the top. The offense mounted and Woodley really started to wear it on his face. Covington was relentless and left “Chosen One” bloody on the canvas in between rounds. In total, Covington out-struck Woodley 113-2 in the frame.
In the fifth and final round, Woodley tried to score a guillotine choke along the cage but Covington was there for a takedown. After a transition on the ground saw Covington land in side control Woodley ended up tapping, indicating a potential rib injury. Covington walked away with the TKO finish.
