Brazilian lightweight Gilbert Burns continued his comeback campaign earlier tonight (Sat., April 27, 2019) at UFC on ESPN+ 8 live on ESPN+ from inside BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when he stopped Octagon newcomer Mike Davis via second-round submission (rear-naked choke).
Despite Davis being a dangerous striker with heavy hands, Burns traded with the UFC newbie early and often. Burns saw some of his takedown attempts thwarted by Davis but “Durinho” kept his composure and eventually gained back control in the second round. That’s where Burns tired Davis out and utilized his elite grappling skills to sink in the rear-naked choke. Davis fought valiantly but was forced to tap for the first time in his short career.

With this performance, Burns locks down his second-straight win at 155 pounds after getting past hard-nosed Canadian Olivier Aubin-Mercier back in December. The 32-year-old Brazilian is continuously showing new wrinkles to his game, specifically in the striking department, and could very well land a top 15 opponent his next time. That is, of course, if Burns doesn’t scare away suitable opponents.
