Former unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is back, and he’s looking for revenge.

The Kazakh star hadn’t stepped into the ring since losing a controversial decision to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez back in September of 2018. But there was little sign of ring rust on Saturday night when he cleaned the clock of previously undefeated Steve Rolls, working the Canadian’s body before crumpling him with a clean left hook to to the jaw.

Rolls did get in some hits of his own in the second round, but for the most part Golovkin’s DAZN debut did exactly what it was supposed to: reminded everyone that “GGG” isn’t going anywhere and is still a fighter to be feared. With the way he punished Rolls through the fight, we think that message was sent loud and clear.

After the fight, Golovkin called out (who else) Canelo, demanding a third match.

”The fans know who they want me to fight next,” Golovkin said in the ring. “I’m ready for September. I’m ready for Canelo. Just bring him, just ask him. I’m ready. If you want big drama show, please tell him. I’m ready to bring back the big drama show. I believe because this is boxing, this is boxing business. Why not? The next fight will be amazing for us.”

And if Alvarez refuses? Well, Gennady can’t do much other than take a page out of Tony Ferguson book.

”I feel right now like the people’s champ,” Golovkin said. “It doesn’t matter for me. I want to beat him but [the belts] don’t matter. I’m the people’s champion.”
