Jared Gooden poured in one hell of an upset win earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 2, 2023) at UFC Austin live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside Moody Center in Austin, Tex., when the welterweight journeyman stopped Wellington Turman with a comeback submission (rear-naked choke) in the second round.

Turman, who lost his return to the welterweight division his last time out, was in full control from the opening bell. He looked quick, confident in his hands, and put Gooden on the defense right away. Gooden couldn’t get going and it resulted in a fairly one-sided first round for Turman.

The Brazilian kept his efforts up in the second round and caught Gooden on his feet. Gooden was hurt pretty badly, but he bit down on his mouthpiece and connected with a hard right hook. That put Turman on the ropes. Gooden unloaded everything and the kitchen sink on the feet before scoring a trip to the ground. He landed in full mount, scored some elbows from the top, and eventually worked his way to Turman’s back for the finish.

Check out the final moments in the above player.

Gooden, 29, returned to UFC earlier this year after parting ways with the promotion back in 2021. His return did result in a decision loss so this fight at UFC Austin was especially important for Gooden. Luckily for him, he was able to weather a heavy storm and become the first person to submit Turman.
