Max Holloway extended his featherweight win streak to 14 last night (Sat., July 27, 2019) at UFC 240 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, when he successfully defended his 145-pound title with a unanimous decision win over former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
Edgar was able to get inside with combinations and land a power overhand right. Holloway tried to create distance to time an inside uppercut that ended up catching “The Answer” at least three times in the first round. Edgar’s speed allowed him to score some good shots in the second, but it was Holloway’s timing that ruled the way, as “Blessed” landed hard power shots that started to bust Frankie up.
Edgar tried to change his luck in the third with more right hands and a few hard takedowns, but Holloway defended nicely and landed some stiff jabs. Holloway eventually caught Edgar with a hard combination and uppercut along the cage that had the challenger hurt.
Holloway kept busy with his jab in the fourth. Edgar would find some moments to land clean combinations inside, but it wasn’t enough to steal momentum. The champion eventually opened up his offense and peppered Edgar at will. Edgar would try to respond with another takedown attempt but Holloway defended once again.
Holloway remained in control to begin the fifth, as his constant movement and unpredictable angles kept Edgar on his toes. Edgar did counter with some hard punches to the body inside, but “Blessed” didn’t allow him to stay in there for too long. That’s how the champion played it for the rest of the fight and eventually walked away with the unanimous decision win.
