Reigning Bellator MMA welterweight champion Rory MacDonald came up considerably short last night (Sat., Sept. 29, 2018) at Bellator 206 live on DAZN from inside SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., when he lost to middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi via second-round TKO.

Stepping up in weight to try to become Bellator’s first two-division champion, MacDonald was in deep water from the opening bell. Mousasi’s elite striking game and bigger frame allowed him to dictate the fight with a stiff lead jab. MacDonald eventually grew tired of having his nose busted up and reached in for a ankle pick in the second round. Mousasi saw it coming, defended nicely, and ended up in top control.

After gaining full mount, Mousasi postured up and landed devastating elbows to an already bloody “Red King.” MacDonald lasted as long as he could but Mousasi’s ground-and-pound was too much to handle.

With this performance, Mousasi extends his current overall win streak to eight (3-0 BMMA) and proves that MacDonald was in over his head with this matchup. Few fighters look as dominant as Mousasi does right now so it will be interesting to see what sort of campaign the champion turns in moving forward.
