Nicky Rodriguez set things off earlier tonight (Fri., Aug. 16, 2024) at the inaugural Craig Jones Invitational from inside Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the two-time ADCC World Championship silver medalist toppled Brazilian veteran Max Gimenis with a second-round rear-naked choke.
The 27-year-old Rodriguez was the perfect choice to spark Day 1 of the Craig Jones Invitational. After all, the heavyweight submission specialist is one the most popular names in American grappling today and someone who could deliver a stoppage to create even more buzz around an anticipated event. Luckily, “Nicky Rod” did not disappointment.
After a back-and-forth first round, Rodriguez was able to out-muscle and out-maneuver Gimenis, who is one of the biggest grapplers competing at CJI this weekend in Las Vegas. Gimenis kept trying to fight the hands, but Rodriguez was too quick. “Nicky Rod” timed his submission attempt perfectly, ripped his arm free, sunk it under Gimenis’ neck, and secured the stoppage.
It was a great performance by Rodriguez and a submission finish that now advances him to the over 80kg quarterfinals. Check out the video highlights below:
