The grappling world witnessed a massive upset earlier tonight (Fri., Aug. 16, 2024) at the inaugural Craig Jones Invitational from inside Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, when No. 1-seeded Victor Hugo tasted defeat at the hands of a Lucas Kanard first-round heel hook submission.

Hugo, who has captured first place at the IBJJF World Championship three years in a row, came into CJI one of the biggest betting favorites on the card. The Brazilian grappling ace was expected to roll through Kanard, especially since the Australian competitor was stepping up on short notice.

In an incredible feat, Kanard locked up a ridiculous heel hook just over one minute into the first round. The two grapplers hit the canvas and Kanard cranked to force the quick tap from Hugo. The entire match lasted 70 seconds as Kanard walks away with the biggest victory of his grappling career and easily one of the most memorable performances from this weekend’s CJI event in Las Vegas.
