Ketlen Souza pulled off a big upset to deliver the first finish inside The Sphere earlier tonight (Sat., Sept. 14, 2024) at UFC 306 live on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) from in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping Mexico’s Yazmin Jauregui via first-round submission (rear-naked choke).
The first two fights on the UFC 306 undercard were solid to say the least, especially the slugfest between flyweights Joshua Van and Edgar Chairez. However, fight fans in attendance had not seen a finish yet despite being in awe from all of the special effects. Luckily, they didn’t have to wait much longer.
The “Prelims” scrap between Souza and Jauregui sadly started with two hard low blows at the hands of the Brazilian. Jauregui was given time to recover and kept trying to move forward. Out of nowhere, Souza landed a massive left hand counter that dropped Jauregui. Souza quickly jumped on top and secured a tight rear-naked choke. She made one adjustment and ended up putting Jauregui unconscious.

This was a fun fight while it lasted, but in the end a tremendous performance by Souza. The 30-year-old fighter was a sizeable underdog and fighting in front of a hostile Mexican-heavy crowd. Souza will have to correct some of her shot selection so she doesn’t keep kicking opponents below the belt, but her power on the feet and reaction time on the ground could be a real problem at 115 pounds.
