Gervonta Davis staked his claim for pound-for-pound best in boxing last night (Sat., June 15, 2024) live on Prime Video pay-per-view (PPV) from inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, defending his WBA lightweight title with a monstrous eighth-round knockout win over the previously undefeated Frank Martin.

Despite being a sizeable underdog, Martin was the more active puncher in the early going. He did damage to the body and from range with a nice lead jab. Davis was able to return the favor when he closed distance, but those moments didn’t come too often. Martin did well to escape in-close fire fights as well with good footwork and constant movement.

Davis eventually found his groove and regained considerable momentum in the seventh round. Martin was still landing, but Davis’ power really started to play a role. In the eighth round, Davis was stalking Martin down and caught him in the corner. “Tank” launched a perfectly-timed left uppercut that landed clean. Martin was hurt and wobbled, which allowed Davis to time a final left hand that put Martin down for the count.

It was a tremendous performance by one of boxing’s best knockout artists and a victory that improves Davis’ overall record to 30-0. He celebrated his eighth-round finish with a backflip off the ropes. Check out the video highlights below:
