Alexander Volkanovski is not going to like this one bit.
A Featherweight title fight between division king Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar is being targeted for the upcoming UFC 240 pay-per-view (PPV) event on July 27, 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
That’s according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who says the fight has been verbally agreed upon by both parties, all that is left to do is iron out the details. The two men were initially booked to throw down at UFC 218 back in 2017, but the fight was scrapped after “The Answer” came down with an injury. The title fight was rescheduled a few months later at UFC 222, but it was also canceled after Holloway suffered an unfortunate setback.
As a result, Edgar faced Brian Ortega at the event and suffered the first knockout loss of his career (see it again here). “T-City” eventually went on to lose to Holloway later in the year. After Edgar got back in the win column against Cub Swanson, he’s been on the campaign trail trying to get the title fight back.
And it seemed to have worked to perfection, as UFC opted to grant him the title fight over the aforementioned Volkanovski, who has won seven in a row inside the Octagon including defeating Jose Aldo last Saturday night (May 11, 2019) at UFC 237.
According to Okamoto, though, Edgar’s willingness to risk his title shot by taking on Ortega on short notice went a long way in the promotion’s decision to awarding him the title fight once again.
