Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, told the mixed martial arts (MMA) universe that he was retired from combat sports last month after failing to come to terms on a new deal with the Endeavor-owned promotion.
He knew it was bullshit, we knew it was bullshit, and just as importantly, promotion president Dana White knew it was bullshit, which is why the Las Vegas fight boss said goodbye to his top star without even batting an eyelash.
You know, “Fool me once…” and all that jazz.
And now that McGregor is being honest with himself in a public forum (a lot of that going around these days) he realizes that saying goodbye to the fight game is a lot harder than it sounds, which is why fans should expect a return sooner, rather than later.
“I love it dearly,” McGregor told a fan on social media. “If I am being honest with myself, I don’t think I will ever be able to fully walk away from fighting. We are all fighters in this world and each of us will be fighting for the rest of our time here. So why not do it live on PPV baby. Pop a bottle!”
White is expected to meet with McGregor next month in Los Angeles to discuss a potential return to the Octagon, one that does not include owning a piece of the promotion. As far as prospective opponents are concerned, it would be great if “Notorious” could time his comeback to coincide with the return of Tony Ferguson, who is just one spot away from McGregor in the official rankings.
