One of boxing’s biggest stars makes his United States debut tonight (Saturday, June 1st) at Madison Square Garden in New York. Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (22-0, 21 KOs) will put his WBA, WBO, and IBF titles on the line against Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr (32-1, 21 KOs). Ruiz is replacing Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, who failed a string of drug tests for multiple PEDs, and he’s doing so having just fought in April. Not exactly how Joshua’s US debut was supposed to pan out.

Joshua hasn’t fought since knocking out Alexander Povetkin in September at Wembley Stadium. While fans were hopeful that he’d face one of Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury in 2019, that’s now off the table. He is expected to crush Ruiz Jr, who’s in his second world title fight, having previously come up just short against Joseph Parker for the WBO title in 2016. Ruiz weighed a whopping 268 lbs and has never looked in the best of shape, but he is surprisingly quick for a big man and was not stopped in his lone loss. Whatever you think of this matchup, you know you’re in for a festive atmosphere thanks to Joshua’s raucous fanbase.
