I never heard of “Compartment Syndrome” but prior to writing this article, I would have expected it to be part of those home-improvement shows on HGTV or even some kind of affliction found on Hoarders.

Instead, it’s excessive pressure built up inside an enclosed muscle space that occurs when there is bleeding or swelling after an injury. Compartment Syndrome is a legit medical emergency because it restricts the flow of blood.

Which is why UFC lightweight, Austin Hubbard, passed out in the hotel elevator.

“It’s like when you go to the grocery store and you pick up a watermelon and you feel how tight it is, that’s how his upper leg felt,” teammate Curtis Blaydes told ESPN. “It was hard. It was pretty scary, but thankfully everything was able to be taken care of in a timely manner and we’re just expecting him to make a full recovery now.”

Hubbard (11-3) scored the first Octagon win of his career by outpointing Kyle Prepolec at the UFC Vancouver event last weekend on ESPN+ (full results here), but had to host his afterparty inside the operating room.

“Well not exactly the way I wanted to spend my night celebrating,” Hubbard wrote on Instagram. “Had to have surgery last night due to the swelling in my leg was so bad it make me pass out which then I was taken to the hospital and had to have my leg cut open to relieve the swelling.”

Hubbard, 27, is expected to be discharged by the end of the week.
