Chael Sonnen continues to poke the bear as he weighs in on the career of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Sonnen, who lost to Jones via TKO back in 2013, made some noise a few weeks back when he suggested that Jones, who has never actually lost inside of the cage throughout his professional career, is running out of time. The two then traded shots about future barbershop stories and Jones’ past legal issues.
It now appears as if Sonnen is stirring the pot again. The former UFC title challenger went in a little deeper about his past comments about Jones during a recent episode of his podcast (watch it HERE). Sonnen goes in pretty heavy about Jones’ past drug habits and current addiction to Twitter warfare.
“I never bury Jon Jones — I don’t feel like I bury Jon Jones,” said Sonnen. “I really don’t. Maybe I’m a little bit rough on Jon. I don’t know about that. I mean, he’s a guy that… Man, that guy’s really good. I guess you would call that a level of respect. But it seems that every time I do a piece on this, somebody takes a small piece of it and tells Jon what I said and Jon has to go to Twitter, Jon has to type out these lines and show that he’s angry. He does this all the time and I’m like ‘I’m not really sure you heard the piece.’
“I can only imagine Jon Jones [gestures] licking the coke off his fingers to type out these lines in 160 characters — and then he wants a response. Jon, here’s my response. I appreciate you typing out lines, and I’d rather see you type lines than snort them.”
Whether Sonnen’s past comments about Jones were taken out of context or not, he’s being pretty straight forward this time around. The two MMA figures have never really seen eye to eye, but did become quite friendly during their opposing coaching stints on The Ultimate Fighter. That camaraderie has seemingly gone out the window and the former opponents are back to bickering.
Jones has yet to respond to Sonnen’s most recent comments, but did defend his own drug use back in 2015 after being caught with benzoylecgonine, the primary metabolite of cocaine, in his system.
“I’m not a cocaine addict by any means or not even a frequent user,” Jones previously explained. “I just made a really dumb decision and got caught with my pants down in this whole situation.”
Despite all of this talk about Jones’ potential decline, willingness to waste his time engaging in Twitter beef, and past habits outside of the cage, “Bones” remains the best fighter of all time and the king of the UFC’s growing 205-pound division. That will remain a constant until something changes inside of the Octagon.
