Invicta FC 6 will feature the long-awaited rematch between Marloes Coenen and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos.
They first met in January 2010 in Strikeforce. Cyborg was defending her title belt, and Coenen put up a valiant effort. At 3:40 of the third round, the referee stopped the bout in favor of Cyborg. Coenen has been working her way toward a rematch ever since.
Since that evening in 2010 the two fighters have had their ups and downs.
Coenen rebounded immediately by moving to bantamweight and capturing the Strikeforce title with a submission victory over Sarah Kaufman. She defended the title once, against Liz Carmouche, before dropping the gold to Miesha Tate. In 2012, she returned to 145-pounds to headline the first Invicta FC card with a win over Romy Ruyssen.
Cyborg is 2-0 with one no contest. She brutalized Jan Finney, and then had a quick TKO over Hiroko Yamanaka. Following the performance, Cyborg tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for a year. She returned in April with a first round domination over Fiona Muxlow.
After three years it is finally time for Coenen‘s rematch, and time for Cyborg to try and wash away the stain of her positive test. Invicta puts together the best possible featherweight match-up on the table.
Invicta FC and All Elbows produced and released the Road to Coenen vs. Cyborg earlier this week. Directed and edited by E. Casey Leydon, this piece takes a look at the upcoming Invicta Featherweight Championship bout and its two combatants.
Take a look at the two impressive fighters who will lock horns for gold this Saturday live on pay-per-view.
