Team Cesar Gracie figher and current UFC welterweight contender, Jake Shields (26-4-1) is preparing himself for the biggest fight of his career, when he meets UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in the headliner at UFC 129.
It will literally be the biggest fight because of the sheer number of fans who have bought out the Rogers Centre in the UFC’s first ever visit to the Canadian Province of Ontario, selling out 55,000 tickets within a short period.
Shields is hoping to make a lot of Canadian fans very unhappy at the April 30 event, by earning a quick victory over the three time Canadian Athlete of the Year winner.
“It was more the weight cut. I had been fighting up a weight for a couple years and didn’t have that long to make the cut. I really thought I could do it and it would be alright, but it turned out to be harder than I thought. This is not to take anything away from (Martin) Kampmann; he fought a great fight and gave me all I could handle…In order to win the fight, I need to take the fight to St. Pierre..I want to end it early, but I’m ready for five rounds if necessary…He’s cool. He doesn’t brag or badmouth; keeps it for the cage.”
Shields is currently riding a fifteen fight win streak that includes victories over fighters such as Martin Kampmann, which he did in his UFC debut at UFC 121, Dan Henderson, Jason “Mayhem” Miller for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, and Yushin Okami.
