Rising UFC star Jon “Bones” Jones was not only impressive in his second round UFC 126 submission win over Ryan Bader on Saturday night, but now he’ll get a chance to impress everyone again by fighting for the UFC light heavyweight title.
After Jones was announced as the winner, stopping Bader with a guillotine choke in the second round, color commentator Joe Rogan announced to the world that current #1 light-heavyweight contender “Suga” Rashad Evans was injured and the UFC was now offering Jones a shot at the UFC title.
“Rashad Evans was scheduled to face (Maurico) “Shogun” Rua for the title. Rashad Evans is injured, he blew out his knee. The UFC wants to give you the opportunity to face “Shogun” Rua for the light heavyweight championship of the world.”
Jones was immediately blown away, collapsing to his knees in sheer astonishment at the opportunity he was just given by the UFC.
Jones responded “That is so great. God is so good I feel so great…I’m going for a world title baby! Let’s do it!”
“Shogun” Rua was on hand for the fight and entered the octagon to offer his thoughts on now facing Jones for his title.
“Jones is a great fighter, I have respect for him. Rashad sorry about your knee but I fight anyone, no problem. Respect to Jon Jones but I’m a professional fighter, it’s no problem.”
Expect a lot of media buzz over the next two days as Jones and Rua take a few days to absorb the news.
