UFC welterweight Jon Fitch (23-3) will take on Jake Ellenberger (23-5) on February 5th at UFC 126, which is set for the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
MMAjunkie.com was the first to report the news, noting that only one fighter has agreed to the bout at this time.
Fitch, one of the top fighters in the division, has won his last 5 as well as defeating 21 of his last 22 opponents. His five wins have all gone the distance with Fitch earning a unanimous decision in each fight. He defeated an overweight Thiago Alves at UFC 117, Ben Saunders at UFC 111, Mike Pierce at UFC 107, Paulo Thiago at UFC 100, and Akihiro Gono at UFC 94. The lone loss in that long string of 21 victories was to UFC champ Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87.
Ellenberger is 2-1 in the UFC, having won his last two since losing his UFC debut. He last appeared in August at the UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko event, stopping John Howard by TKO (doctor stoppage). His other victory was against Mike Pyle at UFC 108, where he would win via TKO (punches). The loss was to Calros Condit at UFN 19 back in Sept. 2009.
A win for Ellenberger would certainly catapult his status in the UFC welterweight division, while a loss for Fitch in February could end any chance of him earning another title shot in the near future.
