It now looks like the heat lamp is shining even brighter after Jones laid into champion Cormier in a recent media call for the aforementioned UFC 197 card, which will now see “Bones” make his return to the Octagon against Ovince Saint Preux.
“Yeah, I would be honored to main event against Daniel Cormier at Madison Square Garden,” said Jones in regards to fighting in New York State, which recently legalized professional MMA . “The question is, you know will Daniel Cormier accept that fight. Daniel Cormier has had a lot of mental struggles when it comes to me and uh…” (laughs) “…that’s just one more thing that he doesn’t need. I’m sure he doesn’t want to fight me in my backyard, because he needs all the mental breaks he can get.”
First things first. Jones must get past a vastly underrated OSP in less than two weeks. But even despite his lengthy absence from competition stemming from a hit-and-run incident back in April of 2015, Jones seems focused on defeating Cormier one last time.
“So, who knows. I doubt he’d fight me at Madison Square Garden,” added Jones. “But like I said, I’ll fight him wherever. The Oklahoma State wrestling room, his living room, whatever.”
As good as a Jones vs. Cormier rematch would be in front of a wild NYC crowd at MSG, it’s going to be hard to keep this stemming beef off of UFC 200’s historic card.
