After listening to Melvin Guillard say he deserves a shot at the UFC lightweight title after the fighters win over Evan Dunham this past Saturday night, two-time UFC #1 lightweight contender Kenny Florian (14-5) says he should fight him first.
Florian was a guest on Pro MMA Radio on Monday, he offered his opinion on the bout between Guillard and Dunham, as well as the rest of the UFC lightweight division.
“It doesn’t make sense. There’s a lot of guys working hard. It’s who the best fighter is. If Melvin thinks he deserves a shot over me, he should fight me and beat me. It’s always about who the best fighter is. Who has he beaten? What has he done? That’s great he’s finally considered a top contender. Losing to Joe Stevenson in the first round isn’t gonna get you that shot. You have to be consistent. He has to separate himself from the pack. I would take that fight.”
Florian had been scheduled to meet Dunham at the UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 event but a knee injury has him sitting on the benches. The former #1 contender is coming off a loss to Gray Maynard for the top contender position, having lost a unanimous decision at UFC 118. The loss erased back-to-back wins for Florian.
Guillard, meanwhile is coming off his big win over Dunham and his fourth straight victory. In 2010 he earned a split decision over Jeremy Stephens at UFC 119, a KO (knee to the body) over Waylon Lowe at UFC 114, and beat Ronnys Torres at UFC 109 via unanimous decision.
