Dustin Poirier delivered the goods last night (Sat., April 13, 2019) at UFC 236 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, when he powered through UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway via unanimous decision in the main event. Poirier’s efforts not only earned him the interim 155-pound title but also a future showdown with current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov, who is currently suspended for his role in UFC 229’s post-fight brawl with Conor McGregor’s team, wasted little time reaching out to Poirier via Twitter after his five-round war with “Blessed.” Khabib may have scored the interim title fight a little differently than the judges did but he’s still ready to give Poirier what he wants deserves.

“I don’t agree with the judges 49:46, I got a draw, my respect to both fighters, and Porier’s achievement so far cannot be denied, my congratulations Dustin, see you in September,” wrote Khabib.

Sounds like an official invitation to me.

Poirier, 30, has really come into his own over the past two years. Since the start of 2017, “Diamond” has compiled an impressive Octagon record of 5-0 (1 NC) with three memorable finishes and now a decisive win over a pound-for-pound champion like Holloway. If that doesn’t lead to a shot at the undisputed title then this whole game is rigged.

When Poirier gets his hands on “Eagle” later this year he’s going to have to fight even better than he did last night. Khabib is on another level than Holloway and poses a completely different threat. Nevertheless, Poirier has earned his chance to knock off the Russian champ and further cement is growing MMA legacy.
