What is up with this influx of double knockouts

I mean, I’m certainly not complaining, especially if they keep getting weirder and weirder.

Like this one.

At Midwest Championship Fighting 6, attendees were treated to a rarity within a rarity—a meta-rarity, if you will.

In a video captured by MMA The Zone, Kerwin Sherrill and Derek Thompson square off in what immediately turns into an all-out brawl.

The two sling heavy leather and exchange blows in some wild scrambles until the improbable happens.

Two right hands. Two chins.

One moment of impact.

Sherrill and Thompson land crushing blows at precisely the same time, and the result is a double knockout.

But the fun does not stop there.

After simultaneously slow-falling to the canvas, both fighters immediately regain consciousness—sort of.

The referee is clearly as confused as the crowd and nearly stops the fight, but both Thompson and Sherrill regroup enough to convince him they can continue fighting.

After a couple of hilarious baby steps toward his opponent, Thompson secures a takedown and unleashes some ground-and-pound on his clearly still-dazed opponent.

The referee steps in for real this time, and action is halted in Round 1.

Letting the fight continue after the near-double knockout was a risky call, and both fighters looked extremely fuzzy in the aftermath.

To Thompson’s credit, he was smart enough to shoot for the takedown on his wounded foe, and he polished off the extraordinary finish with constant pressure from top position.

The ending, however, is mostly irrelevant, as the moment of pure insanity that preceded it will stand as the highlight of this bout.

What do you think about the referee’s decision? Was that the right call?

Leave a comment, and we’ll discuss this phenomenal finish.
