Chan Sung Jung knows is worse matchup for Alexander Volkanovski than Max Holloway was.
Chan Sung Jung’s first crack at the UFC featherweight title in 2013 was unsuccessful. But after the four-year layoff that led to a 3-1 run and four straight post-fight bonues, “The Korean Zombie” feels he is ready to get another shot at UFC gold.
So much so that he even believes he could do way better against current titleholder Alexander Volkanovski than how former champion Max Holloway did at UFC 245.
“I’m eager to know when he will be back. I think I’d be able to beat Volkanovski easier than Holloway could,” he told MMA Fighting.
Currently ranked number four in the official rankings, Jung says he didn’t feel he was warranted a title shot until he knocked out Frankie Edgar at UFC Busan more than a week ago.
But if the opportunity does not come his way next, the 32-year-old fighter says he is willing to take one more fight.
“I had this thought in the back of my head where, ‘If I were to knock Frankie out, I’d have the right to call Volkanovski out.’ Then it happened way too soon during the first round, and without hesitation, I called him out,” he explained.
“I do kind of think that I may have to fight once more [before the title shot],” Jung added. “If I have to face another opponent, I’ll go for it.”
Jung holds a record of 16-5 (with 14 wins by stoppage).
