Chan Sung Jung pulled through with yet another massive knockout victory last night (Sat., June 22, 2019) at UFC on ESPN+ 12 live on ESPN+ from inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, when he finished featherweight contender Renato Moicano via TKO just 58 seconds into their main event.
Jung, better known as “Korean Zombie,” was coming off a disappointing loss to Yair Rodriguez back in November in which “El Pantera” won with a last-second knockout (highlights HERE) in a fight that Jung was clearly winning. Heading into UFC Greenville, “Korean Zombie” was looking for a win that would make him forget about that haunting 2018 loss.
“I definitely forgot about that,” Jung said during the UFC Greenville post-fight show. “But as a fighter, it definitely helps when you’re on a winning streak, as opposed to a losing streak.”
Jung, 32, is now 2-1 since returning from his four-year hiatus back in 2017. The former UFC featherweight title challenger arguably looks better than ever and if it wasn’t for that flash elbow from Rodriguez then “Korean Zombie” could be on the doorstep of another title shot.
For now, Team Zombie is content with fighting any contender currently ranked in the top five.
“Probably 4, 3, 2 and 1,” said Jung’s translator and coach, Eddie Cha. “We talked about it, but we don’t want to look ahead. I think anybody higher-ranked than he is, we’re one step closer to that goal.”
All in all, UFC Greenville was a smashing success for “Korean Zombie.” He rebounded in memorable fashion from his last Octagon outing to put a stop to a highly-ranked contender in the jam-packed featherweight division. Jung, who absorbed little to no damage in his main event bid, also gained even more traction with American fans, who seem to love the Korean’s zombie-like nature.
“We didn’t even know there were Koreans in South Carolina, so we were super happy to see that,” Cha said.
As long as Jung can stay healthy there’s no reason he can’t return to the cage by the end of 2019. And if the knockout artist is able to put forth another performance like he did last night he could quickly become a top title contender entering 2020.
