Lewis Gonzalez replaces injured JZ Cavalcante against Justin Gaethje for WSOF lightweight title

JZ Cavalcante’s loss is Lewis Gonzalez’s gain.

Just days after announcing that Justin Gaethje would fight Cavalcante for the inaugural World Series of Fighting lightweight title on Jan. 18, the promotion informed MMAFighting.com that Gonzalez has replaced Cavalcante due to an injury suffered in training.

WSOF president Ray Sefo said Gonzalez and Gaethje have verbally agreed to the new title fight. No details were available about Cavalcante’s injury, which was first reported by MMAJunkie.com, but he is expected to be out for a considerable amount of time.

The undefeated Gonzalez (9-0) defeated veteran Antonio McKee in his WSOF debut in August. Seven of his nine pro wins have come via TKO or submission.

Gaethje (10-0) is 3-0 in WSOF, most recently defeating Dan Lauzon via second-round knockout.

WSOF 8, which will be headlined by the 155-pound title fight, will take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and the main card will air on NBCSN. Also announced for the card are Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle and Tyson Nam vs. Cody Bollinger.

WSOF returns this Saturday night on NBCSN with a card headlined by Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Lance Palmer for the promotion’s inaugural featherweight crown.
