UFC heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis gives his take on the happenings over the weekend at UFC 229.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has yet to release official sanctions for the post-fight melee that erupted at UFC 229 on Saturday night. What has been talked about so far is that Khabib Nurmagomedov may be facing a fine and a suspension after going over the fence and rushing towards Conor McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis.
Several opinions from fighters, media members, and fans were formulated from the untoward incident. UFC heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis, for one, does not agree that Khabib should be suspended.
“No,” Lewis responded when asked by TMZ if the Dagestani should be suspended for his actions. “He really didn’t do anything. He didn’t do nothing, he just jumped in the stands. He didn’t really hit that guy, that guy really started hitting him.”
As for McGregor, the next best move that Lewis sees would be retirement.
“Sh-t, there ain’t nothing he can really do or prove anymore. He made more money than I would ever make in this sport so he probably should just sit his ass down, too.”
“I would,” Lewis said when asked if McGregor should indeed hang it up for good. “He made life-changing money. He really don’t have to fight.”
”I’m fighting just so I can take care of my family. I don’t fight just because I love it just that much. I’m fighting because it’s a job for me.”
Lewis went home a happy man on Saturday night, with a come-from-behind knockout victory over Alexander Volkov. He also bagged an extra $50,000 for Performance of the Night, and is now being talked about as a possible opponent for current champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 230 this November.
