Professional Fighters League (PFL) continues its 2022 season TONIGHT (Thurs., April 28, 2022) with a stacked line up of Heavyweights and Featherweights.

This week’s main event pits 2021 tournament champion, Bruno Cappelozza, against English veteran Stuart Austin, while two-time Featherweight champ Lance Palmer meets UFC veteran Chris Wade in the co-feature. Other names of note include Brendan Loughnane, Renan Ferreira and Denis Goltsov.

PFL 2 PLAY-BY-PLAY:

265 lbs.: Bruno Cappelozza vs. Stuart Austin

Round one: Low kicks from Cappelozza to start. They trade on the fence and Cappelozza grabs double unders. Single-leg attempt rebuffed a minute in. Outside trip gets Austin down, though he doesn’t stay there. They separate. Austin low kick. He shoots under a two-piece, eating hammerfists along the way. Cappelozza forces him to a knee for a bit. They separate. Front kick attempt from Cappelozza, then an overhand right that hurts Austin. Cappelozza jumps on him with two minutes to go.

Cappelozza on top in half guard. Short punches. One minute to go. Quarter guard, now mount. He postures up with punches and Austin covers up, prompting the stoppage.

Final result: Cappelozza def. Austin by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Lance Palmer vs. Chris Wade

Round one: Wade advancing and switching stance. 1-3 attempt. Palmer tries a counter left, then takes a finger in the eye a minute in. Wade fires low kicks when they resume before absorbing a left. Another solid left by Palmer. Continuing to find the mark with that punch. Double jab by Wade two minutes in. Head kick attempt. Wade staying busy with the kicks. Two minutes to go.

Hard lead left by Palmer. Low kick connects. Wade staying on the advance. One minute to go. Wheel kick attempt. Low kick by Palmer. More Wade kicks. 10-9 Palmer.

Round two: Wade comes forward behind the jab and denies a takedown. Knees to the thigh and body as he presses Palmer against the fence. One minute in. Solid left from Palmer on the break. Jabs from Wade. Palmer counters a low kick with a left hand two minutes in. Quick four-piece by Wade on the fence. Continuing to toss out strikes, lands a low kick with two minutes to go.

Hard counter left by Wade as he eats a low kick. Check hook, body kick. Three-piece, solid right by Wade as Palmer considers changing levels. Clean right cross. One minute to go. Palmer’s just not doing enough. Wade tries a spinning back kick, blocks a 1-2. Palmer tries to advance in the final seconds. 10-9 Wade.

Round three: Palmer whiffs on some early punches, eats some low kicks. Wade tries a spinning kick. Low kick connects, Palmer tries a left hand in return. One minute in. Low kick stumbles Palmer for a moment. Solid right cross and low kick. Palmer hits a reactive takedown, but Wade works his way up from the front headlock. Left hand and low kick land for Palmer two minutes in. Wade absorbs a left and comes back with volume. Two minutes to go.

Body kick from Wade. Front kick upstairs. Palmer content to circle, block, and retreat for the most part. Wade tries a wheel kick with a minute to go. Low kicks. Palmer misses on an overhand left. Wade goes for a jumping knee, lands a low kick, eats a straight left. 10-9 Wade.

Final result: Wade def. Palmer by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Brendan Loughnane vs. Ryoji Kudo

Round one: Kudo tossing out kicks as he circles. Quick jab from Loughnane. More Kudo kicks. One minute in. Kudo’s checking Loughnane’s own low kicks so far, puts together a decent combo. No major power connections yet after 90 seconds. Loughnane fires a naked low kick and Kudo drops him with a left hook. Kudo follows him down and drops heavy punches from guard two minutes in. Loughnane manages to weather it and kick him off before standing. Both land good low kicks. Two minutes to go.

Kudo trying to blitz at times. Spinning back kick from Loughnane, then a counter right. Kudo to the body. Kudo low kick met by a counter right with a minute to go. Both land leg kicks. Loughnane tries a spinning back kick again. One more at the bell. 10-9 Kudo.

Round two: Kudo staying aggressive, outright chases Loughnane for a bit. Lead right lands, clinch. Double jab, body shot. One minute in. Loughnane low kick and jab, partially blocks a lead hook. He puts Kudo on the fence, eats a knee and right hand on the break. Combo from Kudo behind it. Loughnane hauls him to the fence two minutes in. They separate without much conflict. Loughnane low kick. Kudo lands a double-leg, can’t keep him down. Brief clinch. Another Loughnane low kick. Spinning back kick, next low kick checked. Two minutes to go.

Loughnane weaves out of the way of a combo, then takes Kudo to the fence a bit later. Body lock takedown attempt, nice knee. They separate with a minute to go. Loughnane lands a double-leg, Kudo stands with a whizzer. Knees from Loughnane in the clinch. They trade on the exit and Loughnane sends him to a knee with a left hook. 10-9 Loughnane.

Round three: They exchange early. Loughnane denies a takedown, then tries one of his own. He gets Kudo to his knees, then kicks his base out when he stands. One minute in. They separate 30 seconds later. Low kick from Kudo. He tries to step in with a 2-3 and gets slammed for his trouble. Back up, back down, back up. Knees from Kudo inside answered in kind. They separate. Kudo coming forward, missing on some big shots. Both shoot at the same time and they clash heads, opening a cut on Kudo’s forehead. It’s gnarly enough that they wave it off, meaning we’re headed to a technical decision. 10-9 Loughnane.

Final result: Loughnane def. Kudo by unanimous decision


265 lbs.: Renan Ferreira vs. Jamelle Jones

Round one: Ferreira fires a front kick, skips forward, then launches another right as Jones changes levels. Jones runs face-first into Ferreira’s shin, collapses to his knees, and gets drilled with punches until the lights go out.

Final result: Ferreira def. Jones by KO (front kick and punches)


265 lbs.: Denis Goltsov vs. Cody Goodale

Round one: Quick jab lands for Goltsov, who answers a right cross with a low kick. Another heavy jab rings Goodale’s bell. Goodale looks for the body. One minute in. Goltsov lands a teep, then another stiff jab and knee into the clinch. Outside trip puts him on top in half guard. Decent ground-and-pound landing for him. Two minutes in. More punches. Continuing to pile up short shots. Goodale’s cut open and the ref steps in.

Final result: Goltsov def. Goodale by TKO (punches)
