UFC 274 LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY:

155 lbs.: Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje for vacant lightweight title

Round 1: Time to finally settle the score after a dizzying 24 hours, highlighted by Oliveira’s scale fail. Just a reminder: Only Gaethje can win the title tonight. Final result: Oliveira def. Gaethje by submission (rear naked choke)

115 lbs.: UFC Strawweight Champion Rose Namajunas vs. Carla Esparza

Round 1: Namajunas pumped up herself on the walk to the cage with her now familiar, “I’m the best” chant, while Carla awaited stoically in her corner for the bout to start. Fight started off with both fighters about 10 feet apart, neither looking to lead the dance early. Namajunas circled on the outside, more than likely looking to prevent any easy shot and/or takedown attempt. Namajunas pumps a jab, finally, 90 seconds into the bout. Two minutes down and not a single punch has landed … and the crowd was letting them hear it. More feints from Namajunas, circling side to side, with Carla finally touching her with a left hand. Namajunas doubles up on a jab that finally connects. Low kick from Carla finds its mark, then she whiffed on a front kick moments later. Carla bursts with a combination, but finds nothing but air. Round ends with basically no punches being thrown. Perhaps the most futile round in UFC championship history? 10-9 Namajunas … I guess.

Round 2: Carla opened with a straight right, but was nowhere close to landing. Namajunas pawing a jab, feinting and circling and waiting for Carla to make a move. Overhand right from Namajunas is blocked. Carla reaches down for a single-leg takedown, but Namajunas was hip to it and spun out quick. Four total strikes landed in the fight so far and we are 7.5 minutes deep into it. Jab from Namajunas misses, with Carla countering with a looping left. Crowd really letting the ladies hear it here with one minute remaining. Jab from Namajunas, but it barely grazed Carla. Overhand left from Namajunas, with Carla missing on a low kick. Front kick from Carla ends another miserable round. 10-9 Carla … I guess (for the brief aggression).

Round 3: Namajunas looks a little more alive this round, coming out of her corner pumping her jab. Overhand right from Namajunas misses the mark, with Carla countering with a shot that also missed. Low kick from Carla, then a brief exchange, with Carla scoring a blast double, but Namajunas popped off the canvas like toast. Namajunas with a shovel uppercut along the cage, then a nice combination moments later. Low kick from Carla misses, with Namajunas continuing to bounce all over the place. Right hand from Carla, with Namajunas missing on a looping left because of a slip. Carla goes air born with a Superman punch that, surprise!, was nowhere near landing. Carla misses on a single with 30 seconds remaining, with Namajunas back on her bike. Namajunas misses with an overhand right at the bell. 10-9 Carla … I guess (for the split-second takedown). Super weird fight.

Round 4: Carla pulling early punches, with Namajunas whiffing on some strikes. Low kick from Carla, then ducking under a right hand and attempting a brief takedown that didn’t materialize. Esparaza finally in deep on a single, but she was too high getting to the back of Namajunas and was dumped off. Back to their feet now down two minutes, with Carla still trying to get her hands on an elusive Namajunas. Front kick from Namajunas misses, who continues to just dance and switch stances … not much else going on … still. Right hand from Namajunas, with Carla ducking under and getting behind her. Namajunas on her knees, with Carla trying to keep her down, but Namajunas got upright and drilled her with a right hand on the way back up. Slip from Namajunas on a right hand … second or third slip of the fight. 10-9 Carla.

Round 5: Namajunas needed a finish on this unofficial scorecard — but it’s such an odd fight might as well flip a coin. Namajunas’ corner encouraged her to pick it up, but might appear to be too little, too late. Namajunas with a hard right hand one minute in to the final round, with Carla scoring a front kick moments later. Another shot from Namajunas, but Carla responded with a hard left hook. Low kick from Carla, then a fake takedown with a left hook upstairs. The pair trade shots midway through the round, with Carla trying for a takedown but abandoning it almost immediately. No urgency, nothing down the stretch from either woman. Namajunas with a late takedown at the bell that probably won her a round. That was without a doubt one of the worst championship fights in UFC history. 10-9 Namajunas.

Final result: Esparza def. Namajunas via split decision (49-46, 48-47, 47-48)
