Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., for the UFC Charlotte mixed martial arts (MMA) event TODAY (Sat., May 13, 2023), streaming LIVE on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+. UFC Charlotte — also known as UFC on ABC 4 —will be headlined by the 265-pound showdown between Top 15-ranked heavyweight contenders Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Jailton Almeida. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, former light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith tangles with Brazilian fan favorite Johnny Walker, in UFC Charlotte’s co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, welterweight wunderkind Ian Machado Garry battles the venerable Daniel Rodriguez.

265 lbs.: Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Jailton Almeida

Round 1: Rozenstruik defends the first takedown just seconds into the round. Almeida circling, switching stance. Feint left hand to double-leg and this one puts him on top in half guard. One minute in. Heavy shoulder pressure from Almeida, trying to slide his knee through the half guard. Two minutes in. More top pressure from Almeida, no major strikes. He gets to side control with two minutes to go.

Rozenstruik tries to turn and Almeida takes mount, then wraps up the RNC as soon as Rozenstruik turns his back. Another first-round finish for Almeida.

Final result: Almeida def. Rozenstruik by submission (rear naked choke)


205 lbs.: Anthony Smith vs. Johnny Walker

Round 1: Both men keeping their distance early on. Low kick from Walker, long right hand from Smith in return. Walker focusing on leg kicks a minute in. Lead right by Smith. Walker tries a front kick, then a head kick and flying knee. Smith fires back and gets stung by a jab, but recovers quickly and comes back with an overhand right. Walker potshotting two minutes in. Working behind the jab. Flying knee falls short, low kicks land. Body kick to left hand. Smith lands his own body kick with two minutes to go.

Walker fires a front kick and lands flush to the cup, prompting a pause. Back to the action. Hook kick just misses for Walker. Smith tries to bull-rush his way in and gets clipped by hard hooks, prompting him to shoot. Walker tries to clobber him the way he did Paul Craig, but ends up on his back in half guard. One minute to go. Smith not doing a whole lot from the top. Walker gets to his feet and takes Smith down in the final seconds. 10-9 Walker.

Round 2: Walker playing a patient, long-distance game to very good effect. As I type that, he leans in too far with a right hand and gets stung by a counter, but manages to keep his footing. Low kicks from Walker a minute in. Front kick downstairs. Low kick, body kick. Quick check hook by Smith. Low kick of his own answered in kind. It’s a sparring session two minutes in. Both land leg kicks. Overhand right and jab land for Smith. Walker tries to get back to the jab and eats counters with two minutes to go.

More long-range kicks from Walker; they’re more-or-less taking turns at this point. One minute to go. Walker tries a cartwheel kick, no dice. They’re having a conversation in there about Walker “attacking” Smith’s family or something. Walker turns it up a little in the final seconds. 10-9 Walker, I guess?

Round 3: Smith catches an early kick, can’t do anything with it. More half-committal low kicks from Walker, who avoids the brunt of Smith’s overhand rights. Eye poke by Walker a minute in as he tries a flying knee. Smith’s trying to land big swings as Walker picks away at him but just can’t find the distance. Walker follows low kicks with a hook kick, can’t connect, has to back away under fire. Two minutes in. Low kicks from Walker. Just piling up shots to the calf. Smith’s moving poorly at this point. Hard side kick to the knee by Walker with two minutes to go.

Smith looks like the attrition’s getting to him. He tries a slow-motion takedown and Walker clubs him with punches for a bit before bailing when Smith tries to turn for a leg. He waves Smith up and goes right back to attacking the lead leg. One minute to go. Walker being patient despite Smith looking dead on his feet. Low kick to jab. Solid left hook around the guard. Smith trying to swing back but he can barely move. Walker tries some flying knees before the bell. 10-9 Walker.

Final result: Walker def. Smith by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Ian Machado Garry vs. Daniel Rodriguez

Round 1: Garry circling, Rodriguez advancing. Body shot from Rodriguez. Garry body kick in return, stiff jab met by an overhand left from Rodriguez. Both just miss with big swings a minute in. Garry lands a body kick, looking for straight rights. He ties up, turns, and separates when Rodriguez gets him to the fence. Jab from Rodriguez, body kick from Garry two minutes in. Head kick lands for Garry with the foot, Rodriguez eats it without issue. 1-2 from Garry to follow up. Garry’s controlling the distance well so far. Another head kick and this one lands with the shin. Rodriguez crumbles to the mat and Garry swarms him for the finish.

Final result: Garry def. Rodriguez by TKO (head kick)


205 lbs.: Ihor Potieria vs. Carlos Ulberg

Round 1: Ulberg tosses out some heavy kicks to start. One minute in. Potieria falls short with a spinning back fist. Ulberg head kick blocked. Ulberg’s content to sit at range and potshot, while Potieria doesn’t seem inclined to press the issue. Another blocked head kick from Ulberg. When Potieria does try to attack with an ugly right hook, Ulberg slumps him with a nasty left hook to the temple and pours on the hurt. Ulberg walks off when Potieria appears to go out, but before he can jump back in, the ref intervenes.

Final result: Ulberg def. Potieria by TKO (punches)


170 lbs.: Tim Means vs. Alex Morono

Round 1: Means potshotting at a distance, attacking the legs and body. Counter right from Morono. He catches a body kick and comes back with an overhand right. Sharp straight left from Means, who tries to follow with a wheel kick. Body lock against the fence a minute in. They separate 30 seconds later and get back to trading in center cage. Means landing the greater volume, Morono looking to time counter punches. Two minutes in. Clubbing shots from Morono inside. Means to the body. More body shots with two minutes to go.

Means avoiding most of the counters. Good clinch work and shots on the break. Morono 1-2. One minute to go. Both whiff on wide swings. Head kick to 1-2-3 by Means. Short-range exchange. Lunging right lands for Morono. Means hops in with knees and lands some brutal lefts against the fence. 10-9 Means.

Round 2: Means continuing to advance and snipe with impressive accuracy. Morono follows a head kick with a flurry. Means continuing to focus on the body. One minute in. Means wings an overhand left, then turns it into a takedown at the base of the fence. Morono quickly pops back up and lands a straight right. Solid boxing sequence from Morono, who eats a head kick in return. Means ducks a spinning back fist and changes levels, where Morono’s arm-in guillotine is waiting. Morono wraps up his guard and there’s the tap.

Final result: Morono def. Means by submission (guillotine choke)


170 lbs.: Matt Brown vs. Court McGee

Round 1: McGee working behind the jab, eats a leg kick. Low kicks of his own answered in kind. One minute in. Brown really leaning on the leg kick. McGee times the next one to grab a body lock and muscle Brown to his knees. Looking for the back, one hook in. Brown manages to stand and remove the hook, eating knees to the thigh. McGee lands an elbow two minutes in, re-enters the clinch. Continuing to grind against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Solid knee by Brown on the exit. Low kick exchange. Teep. McGee throwing a lot of jabs but falling an inch short with most of his offerings. One minute to go. When he tries to cover that extra inch, Brown’s there to meet him with a counter right that instantly turns the lights out.

Final result: Brown def. McGee by KO (punch)


265 lbs.: Karl Williams vs. Chase Sherman

Round 1: Williams shoots, denied, lands a right hand on the exit. Solid counter left by Sherman a minute in. Williams 1-1-2 falls short. Low kick to takedown by Williams. Sherman uses a whizzer to get back to his feet, still stuck against the fence. Knee attempt on the exit. Quick straight right and low kick from Sherman two minutes in. Counter left hooks land for Williams. Good Sherman low kick. Glancing 1-1-2 comes back at him. Sherman doing solid work with the leg kicks. Two minutes to go.

1-2s from Williams. Sherman advancing, eats a combo. Nice blast double by Williams puts him on top in half guard. Chasing a kimura with a minute to go. Loses it, drops elbows and punches instead. Sherman works to his feet at the 10-second mark, eating shots. 10-9 Williams.

Round 2: Back to the long-range boxing. Heavy counter 2-3 by Williams a minute in. Glancing overhand into the body lock. Quick separation. Low kicks from Sherman, quick combo comes back at him. Stiff jabs landing for Williams. Two minutes in. WIlliams check hook, Sherman low kick that spins Williams around. Williams throws his own low kicks, eats a heavy one. Another. Two minutes to go. Williams barrels in, briefly gets reversed, then hunts a single-leg with two minutes to go.

Sherman defends and separates. Stiff jab by Williams. Sherman low kick, Williams jab. One minute to go. Sherman still plodding after him, avoids a 1-1-2. Ugly level change attempt by Williams, more jabs. He shoots, can’t land it, throws a knee to the body that lands on Sherman’s cup. Sherman takes a while to recover, but manages to do so. Quick punching exchanges in teh waning seconds. 10-9 Sherman.

Round 3: Early combination from Williams, who awkwardly tries to follow with a takedown and ends up flailing for a bit. Both land hard left hooks. Williams shoots, denied a minute in. Stiff jabs piling up. Good check hook. Sherman still wading after him, eats another left hook and jab. Sherman 2-3, low kick to flurry to knee as Williams changes levels. Landing elbows as he defends two minutes in. Sherman sprawls, Williams keeps diving, still nothing. More jabs from Williams. Sherman low kick. Two minutes to go.

Williams shoots, denied. Check hook. More jabs landing. Check hook met by a Sherman low kick. One minute to go. Hard right cross by Williams. Sherman getting caught coming in over and over. Williams shoots, denied, eats a knee. Sherman puts him on the fence in the final seconds. 10-9 Williams.

Final result: Williams def. Sherman by unanimous decision


140 lbs.: Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Cody Stamann

Round 1: Silva de Andrade tossing out a lot of early kicks as Stamann steadily advances. Nice uppercut catches Stamann leaning. One minute in. Jab to level change from Stamann, not even close. Snap kick to the body by the Brazilian, who’s throwing an impressive amount of volume. Good low kick. Stamann continuing to push forward. Two minutes in. Low-high 3-2 from Silva de Andrade, then some low kicks as Stamann tries to pressure. Combo by Stamann, who’s eating a good number of low kicks. Silva de Andrade snap kick with two minutes to go.

Stamann gets in deep on a shot and, after a brief pause, dumps Silva de Andrade to the mat. In the scramble, Stamann takes what looks more like a push than an actual illegal upkick, but the ref does pause to warn Silva de Andrade and then restart them on the feet for some Godforsaken reason. Silva de Andrade keeping up the volume with punches and kicks. One minute to go. Counter left hook by Silva de Andrade.He shoots, gets it, gets flipped away with a butterfly hook. Hard exchange near the fence. Spinning back kick from Silva de Andrade. Left hook, knees, elbows in the clinch. Stamann shrugs it off. 10-9 Silva de Andrade.

Round 2: Stamann continuing the forward advance. Huge left hook from Silva de Andrade lands to surprisingly little effect. Stamann shoots, denied. Left hooks from Silva de Andrade. Stamann chases him with a body kick a minute in. Stamann really struggling to close the distance. He shoots, denied, eats a left hook. Good counter right from Silva de Andrade. Two minutes in. Hard low-high 3-2. Switch head kick. Stamann catches him coming in with a combo. More good body work by Silva de Andrade. Two minutes to go.

Stamann’s volume is petering out and Silva de Andrade is avoiding most of it. Switch head kick from Silva de Andrade, who eats a counter right and rips the body again. Lead right by Silva de Andrade. One minute to go. Counter 1-2 lands for Stamann, who again eats that same left hook to the body-straight right to the head combo. He shoots, can’t complete it. 10-9 Silva de Andrade.

Round 3: Stamann’s just several steps behind, unable to keep up with Silva de Andrade’s volume or consistently cut off the cage. Low kick exchange. One minute in. Counter left hook catches Silva de Andrade coming in, Stamann doesn’t try to capitalize. Good combo by Stamann. Spinning back kick from Silva de Andrade in return. There’s that same left hook to the body-right hand to the head combo for the hundredth time. Two minutes in. Stamann comes in with a combo and a huge left hand discombobulates Silva de Andrade. Silva de Andrade wobbles, gets blasted to the mat with another big shot. Stamann follows him down into guard and tries to chip away. Silva de Andrade considers a leglock, then tries to scramble. Two minutes to go.

Stamann manages to retain half guard. Silva de Andrade regains guard. Stamann not doing much to posture. Now Silva de Andrade kicks him off and goes back to chucking head on the feet. One minute to go. Stamann winging counters as Silva de Andrade throws everything he’s got left in the tank. Ugly exchanges until the bell. 10-9 Stamann.

Final result: Silva de Andrade def. Stamann by unanimous decision


125 lbs.: Mandy Bohm vs. Ji Yeon Kim

Round 1: Kim comes out slugging, only to fall victim to a slick throw from Bohm. Bohm quickly latches onto Kim’s back as the latter tries to stand and hunts the RNC. The angle’s bad a minute in and Kim waits it out to set up in top guard. Bohm now looking for a triangle, doesn’t quite have it locked in. She just can’t get her foot behind her knee two minutes in. Kim slowly works her way free, then takes Bohm’s back with two minutes to work.

Kim riding without hooks, trying to worm the choke under Bohm’s chin. Good spin by Bohm to land on top in guard. Bohm stands over her and looks to drop punches before passing to side control. 10-9 Bohm in a swing round.

Round 2: Good exchange in the center to start things off. Low kick and combo from Bohm. Kim catches her with a counter left and denies a level change, then lands a knee as Bohm backs her to the fence. Bohm comes back with elbows. Kim reverses. Bohm attempts a whizzer kick and ends up on the bottom in half guard. Two minutes in. Bohm regains full guard. Kim not doing much from the top. Two minutes to go.

Crowd’s not happy with the lack of action, though they’re pretty subdued compared to others. The ref ultimately stands them up 30 seconds later. Kim wading in with loaded-up right hands. Bohm lands a counter left with a minute to go but she’s looking spent. She changes levels once again and this time Kim grabs a guillotine. She closes guard, but it doesn’t look terribly deep. Bohm waits it out until the bell. Afterwards, as Bohm stands to go back to her corner, Kim kicks her in the chest and earns a point deduction. 9-9.

Round 3: Early clinch from Bohm takes Kim to the fence. Kim reverses, eats a knee on the break, then puts her on the fence again. One minute in. Kim forces Bohm to a three-pint stance and knees her thighs, then lands a blatantly illegal knee to the head while Bohm has a hand on the mat. Bohm’s saying she can’t see and the ref calls it. Odds are it’ll be a DQ.

Not clear at this point if they’re going to a technical decision. If so, 10-9 Kim this round unless she got a point deducted, in which case 9-9. Nobody seems to know what’s going on; they’ve been at this for more than five minutes with no sign of a decision in sight.

Final result: Bohm def. Kim by technical decision


170 lbs.: Bryan Battle vs. Gabe Green

Round 1: Green comes out like a house on fire, unloading punching and kicks and chasing Battle across the cage. As Battle’s back hits the fence, he comes back with a vicious right hand that immediately puts Green to sleep. Shame he missed weight, because that was a Performance of the Night knockout if I’ve ever seen one.

Final result: Battle def. Green by KO (punch)


135 lbs.: Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Tainara Lisboa

Round 1: Low kick from Clark to start things off. Quick counters from Lisboa. They trade hands in center cage. One minute in. Two-piece by Clark, then a low kick that Lisboa answers with a flurry. Clark ducks a combination and hauls her to the fence, eating a knee on the way. Two minutes in. Clark still fighting for the takedown. Lisboa reverses with two minutes to go.

Clark tries to push her way off the fence and Lisboa uses the momentum to hip toss her into half guard. One minute to go. Clark looking to regain guard, keeping Lisboa from posturing. 10-9 Lisboa.

Round 2: Good straight right from Clark, but as she tries to press the issue, Lisboa cracks her with a counter right that forces a level change. Clark gets the outside trip, can’t keep her down, stays attached a minute in. They separate. Lisboa puts together a combo two minutes in, stalking Clark around the cage. Brief in-and-out trades. Good counter shot by Clark. Two minutes to go.

Lisboa knocks her back with a fast 1-2. Another good exchange and Lisboa gets the better of it, stinging Clark and blasting her with knees and punches when the latter tries to shoot. Clark gets double unders and puts her on teh fence. One minute to go. The ref separates them for lack of action. Clark’s corner is yelling for her to go for it. Good level change, can’t finish anything before the bell. 10-9 Lisboa.

Round 3: Lisboa pushes forward with some sharp boxing, but an ill-advised takedown attempt ends with Clark on top in guard. One minute in. Lisboa keeping her guard closed and holding onto an overhook. Clark clearly down two rounds but not offering much from the top. Two minutes in. There’s a solid elbow that splits Lisboa open as the latter looks for an armbar. Clark stacking her, doesn’t seem to be in danger. Out comes the arm with two minutes to go.

Clark showing zero urgency to chase the finish she needs. She postures to try and get past the guard and Lisboa escapes to her feet. As Clark tries to push for a low single, Lisboa latches onto her back and wraps up the RNC for the finish.

Final result: Lisboa def. Clark by submission (rear naked choke)
