LIVE! UFC On FOX 30 ‘Prelims’ Recaps

The action returns to the Octagon later tonight (Sat., July 28, 2018) at UFC ON FOX 30 live on FOX from inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for a main event rematch between former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and streaking title contender Dustin Poirier.

In addition to the 155-pound headliner, former UFC champions Jose Aldo and Joanna Jedrzejczyk will both try to end two-fight losing skids against the likes of Jeremy Stephens and Tecia Torres. Promising young lightweight prospect Alexander Hernandez will also make his return to the cage against Olivier Aubin-Mercier after flattening Beneil Dariush in his UFC debut.

But, before the premier bouts get underway on FOX starting at 8:00 p.m. ET, UFC on FOX 30’s “Prelims” action will go down on Fight Pass starting at 4:00 p.m. ET and FOX starting at 6:00 p.m. ET.

John Makdessi vs. Ross Pearson

Makdessi landed a good jab early. He followed his efforts up with a counter left hook when Pearson engaged inside. Pearson responded with a kick to the head. Makdessi found a home for another counter inside. Makdessi came over the top for a flush right hand. In Round 2, Makdessi became the aggressor and threw the left hook as a lead. “Real Deal” returned favor with some crisp jabs. After getting caught by a Pearson power right, Makdessi charged forward and slung heavy leather before narrowly missing a spinning back fist. Pearson came back with a looping left hook. Makdessi scored again with another counter left. The third round opened with a huge step-in right hand by Pearson. The fight was temporarily stopped following an inadvertent low blow by Makdessi. Both men returned to action with heavy body kicks. A left hook by Pearson backed Makdessi up. The Englishman then shot in for a clinch and pinned Makdessi against the cage. Makdessi broke free but Pearson was there to land heavy combinations on the go. Makdessi remained patient in the pocket and countered with another left hand. Pearson’s face really started to open up. Makdessi caught Pearson with huge combinations that nearly put “Real Deal” out. Pearson somehow ate the damage and pushed forward for more bloody exchanges. At the end of three back-and-forth rounds, Makdessi was the one to walk away with the unanimous decision win.

Alexis Davis vs. Katlyn Chookagian

Chookagian landed some good hands on the outside early as she tried to stay away from the grasp of Davis. Davis tried to close the gap and score her own offense with leg kicks but Chookagian did a good job keeping distance and countering with long strikes. In Round 2, Davis came forward with a good combination followed by another leg kick. A cut opened up on Chookagian’s shin. The battle ensued as Chookagian circled around the outer edges and waited for counter punches and kicks down the pipe, while David continued her leg kick onslaught and controlled most of the action. The third round saw Chookagian hurt Davis with a combination along the cage. Chookagian followed that up with a big kick that got the bloodied veteran’s attention. Davis didn’t offer much offense in the last round as Chookagian smartly stayed out of range and forced Davis to chase her. In the end, it was Chookagian who walked away with the unanimous decision win.

Dustin Ortiz vs. Matheus Nicolau

Nicolau caught Ortiz with a big right hand counter. Ortiz responded with a whipping outside leg kick before landing a crisp jab. Out of nowhere Ortiz launched a devastating head kick that landed flush and put Nicolau on his butt. Ortiz followed up with some insurance shots before the referee jumped in for the knockout stoppage.

Randa Markos vs. Nina Ansaroff

Markos shot in early for a single leg but Ansaroff used the cage wisely to defend. Markos kept busy and eventually dragged the action to the canvas and moved into back control. Ansaroff worked back into full guard and did her best to control the hands and stall any offense from Markos. In Round 2, Ansaroff really started to open up with leg kicks, calf kicks, and right hands. Markos tried to shoot back in but Ansaroff was quick to shrug it off. Ansaroff landed a good body kick before Markos countered nicely and momentarily pushed Ansaroff against the cage. Markos found a home for a flush right hand before the horn. The third and final frame saw Markos push the pace and land a flurry of punches at the four-minute mark. The leg of Markos started to bruise pretty badly from Ansaroff’s previous leg kicks. Markos scored some good points with two crisp jabs before launching in for a takedown along the cage. Ansaroff used a guillotine attempt to wiggle free. Another takedown attempt by Markos was reversed by Ansaroff, who ended up in top control and landed ground-and-pound before the end of the round. In the end, it was Ansaroff who did enough over the course of three rounds to lock down her third-straight victory. This one coming via unanimous decision.

Devin Powell vs. Alvaro Herrera

Powell shot early for a takedown along the cage. Herrera defended nicely and created distance on the feet to land hard body combinations. Powell returned with his own body kick and hurt Herrera badly. Powell jumped on Herrera when he saw he was wobbled and landed another hard kick to the liver before the referee stepped in for the TKO stoppage.
