With “Fight Island” comfortably in its rearview mirror, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will return to its APEX facility this Sat. night (Aug. 1, 2020) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The “UFC Vegas 5” mixed martial arts (MMA) event is topped by a middleweight headliner featuring hard-hitting veteran Derek Brunson against streaking up-and-comer Edmen Shahbazyan. Elsewhere on the card, which airs exclusively on ESPN+, flyweight contenders Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia collide for a spot in the 125-pound title chase. In addition, welterweight stylists Vicente Luque and Randy Brown hook ‘em up in a fun 170-pound clash, not long after lightweight standout Lando Vannata settles his grudge with veteran banger Bobby Green.

185 lbs.: Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan

Round 1: Brunson tries a straight left. Head kick blocked. Shahbazyan fires a right downstairs. 1-2 connects. Body kick by Brunson, who briefly grabs a front headlock. Shahbazyan focusing on the body a minute in. Head kick blocked, counter right connects. Brunson lands a lead left, takes a pair of low-high hooks. Hard left hand from Brunson and he takes Shahbazyan down, powering through the Browne elbows. Brunson puts in a hook two minutes in. Hard left hands on the way up and an elbow on the break. Shahbazyan sends one some heavy rights, clips Brunson with a counter 1-2. Two minutes to go.

Both men go to the body, Shahbazyan’s shot strays low. Brunson answers a wide left hook with an elbow. 2-3 to the body by Shahbazyan, lands a hard knee but briefly gets taken down. One minute to go. They separate. Brunson tries a knee, lands a left behind it. Knee to the body by Shahbazyan. Both go to the body. Knee by Shahbazyan, hard elbow on the break. 10-9 Shahbazyan.

Round 2: Low kick from Brunson. Body kick by Shahbazyan in return. Brunson jab met by a right hand. Body kick to straight left. 1-1-2 by Shahbazyan. Brunson changes levels, dumps him to the mat against the fence. Shahbazyan gets to his feet and avoids some wild lefts on the break. One minute in. Brunson ties up, separates. Brunson dugs a left downstairs. Shahbazyan takes a finger in the eye, prompting a pause. Two minutes in. Hard body kick lands for him, throwing combinations. Another Shahbazyan 1-2. Brunson body kick, thumping left against the fence. He sweeps Shahbazyan’s foot out and takes side control. Shahbazyan looking a bit fatigued. One minute to go. Brunson looking for the back, lands some hard shots. Full mount, now the back, landing all the way. Back to half guard. Nasty elbows. Some brutal punches right at the bell that split Shahbazyan open. That could have been a stoppage. 10-8 Brunson.

Round 3: They pause to examine Shahbazyan’s cut before the start of the round, but let it continue. Heavy punches from Brunson and he drags Shahbazyan to the mat with ease. He prepares to unload further, but Herb Dean quickly and appropriately stops it.

125 lbs.: Joanne Calderwood vs. Jennifer Maia

Round 1: Maia answers a low kick with a 1-2. Teep from Calderwood, counter right. Another Maia combination meets a low kick. Good 1-2-, stiff jab. 1-2 connects. One minute in. Teep from Calderwood. Counter 1-2 lands for her. Side kick downstairs, clean teep. Maia lands to the body, then a right up top. Calderwood tries a head kick. 1-2 from Maia. Calderwood jabs the body, tries a body kick. Three-piece lands for the Brazilian two minutes in. Calderwood lands a teep, then catches a kick for a takedown. On top in half guard against the fence. Maia looking to set up an omoplata. Two minutes to go.

Calderwood gets out and settles in guard. Elbows from Calderwood. Maia turns for an armbar with a minute to go. She rolls Calderwood over and there’s the tap.

170 lbs.: Vicente Luque vs. Randy Brown

Round 1: Brown sending out his jab, eats a leg kick and avoids the return fire. Brown jab, Luque low kick again. Both land calf kicks. Double jab and low kick from Luque. One minute in. Brown sends out some kicks, eats another shin to the calf. Brown switching stance, landing some low kicks but constantly eating them whenever he jabs. Luque falls short with a combination. Low kick exchange. Two minutes in. More Brown jabs and a right to the body. Brown leans in and vets dropped hard by a 1-2. Luque follows him down into half guard. Brown holding onto a fruitless guillotine. Luque lets him up. Two minutes to go.

Left hook lands for Brown in combination. Teeps. Luque calf kick. Sneaky head kick attempt by Brown, lands a counter left as Luque tries to open up. Brown to the body, avoids an overhand right. One minute to go. Luque tries a body kick, then rocks Brown with a left hook against the fence that forces “Rude Boy” to hold himself up with a fence grab. Brown ties up and takes him to the fence. He tries a right on the exit, then a flying knee. 10-9 Luque.

Round 2: Brown tries a front kick, lands a body kick and takes one to the nards. More kicks form Brown when they resume. Spinning back kick downstairs met by a counter hook and overhand right. Calf kick lands for Luque. Lots of jabs from Brown, eats one in return. One minute in. Another calf kick drops Brown, prompting Luque to kick at it a bit before letting him stuff. Left hook by Brown. Uppercut attempt met by a jab and calf kicks. Brown with a counter left on the fence. Another calf kick. Luque grabs a body lock, can’t get the inside trip. They trade inside. Both land lefts. Brown tries an uppercut, fires some nice clinch knees. Short elbow by Luque on the break. Two minutes to go.

Brown answers a body kick with a spinning elbow that draws a smile. High volume landing for Brown. He briefly considers a standing arm triangle, avoids a combo, and hits a body lock takedown into side control. One minute to go. Luque turns to his knees and stands. Another calf kick by Luque. Body kick by Brown, who avoids a right hand and ducks into a front headlock. Luque pulls him up to keep up from putting a hand down, then slams home a knee and follows up with some vicious rights for the finish.

155 lbs.: Lando Vannata vs. Bobby Green

Round 1: Both men land some heavy right hands in the early going. Body kick from Vannata. Vannata tries a head kick and again both land right hands. 1-2 from Vannata, stiff jab. One minute in. Oblique kick by Green, low kick checked. Vannata lands a right downstairs, hurts Green with a right hand and gets hurt with a right hand in return. Simultaneous kicks. Green switching stance. Vannata catches a low kick, lands a good right hand on the break. Jabs from Green. Two minutes in. Both swing hard in the center. Teep by Green, jab exchange. Right hook by Green. Vannata steps in and they trade right hands. 1-1-2 from Green floors Vannata, who looks for deep half guard before escaping to his feet. Green muscles him back down with two minutes to go.

Vannata stands, transitions to the rear waist lock. Hard right hands on the break. Another oblique kick by Green. They exchange in the center. One minute to go. Vannata with a big combination near the fence, eating cunters along the way. Counter hook and clean 1-2 by Green. Vannata answers with a body shot, eats a straight left. Counter right lands for him. They trade rights at the bell. 10-9 Green.

Round 2: Oblique kick from Green. Vannata grabs double underhooks and takes him to the fence, then looks for a combo on the break. Hard low kick lands for him. Vannata slips on an awkward head kick miss. Straight left by Green a minute in and he takes Vannata to the fence in return. They separate. Green oblique kick and calf kicks. 2-1 connects. 1-2 met by a Vannata counter right. Good body shot by Vannata and they jaw at each other. Two minutes in. Vannata fires a head kick and looks for a combination, wrapping up a guillotine as Green shoots in response. Green passes to the appropriate side and pops his head out before Vannata regains guard. Vannata kicks him away and stands.

Jab lands for Green, then an oblique kick. Left hand upstairs, just avoids a right hook from Vannata. 2-3 from Vannata met by a jab. Left hook lands for him. One minute to go. Green lands a body shot and gets taken down as he steps in. Green stands, taking knees to the butt, and eats a right on the break. Calf kick and right hand by Green. Body kick. Vannata tries a wheel kick. Counter right lands for him. 10-9 Green.

Round 3: Green lands some punches, gets wobbled by a nice counter. Hard low kick by Vannata. Good knee by Green inside. Vannata banging the body in return, but gets dropped by a level elbow in the clinch. Green landing some heavy ground-and-pound. One minute in. Elbows from half guard. Green steps over into mount, tries to take the back, loses the choke and avoids a heel hook in return. They stand and separate. Two minutes in. Hard uppercut from Green met by counters. Another counter right and a straight behind it. Jab lands, then he hits a reactive takedown into a guillotine, popping his head out and taking half guard soon after. Two minutes to go.

Vannata gets to his knees, avoids an RNC attempt. He denies a back take and stands. He’s still advancing, eats a body shot. Both land hard in the center. One minute to go. Vannata digs a left hook downstairs. Head kick attempt. Brief clinch, Green low kick and 1-2-1. Another two-piece but he gets cracked by a counter right. Vannata threatens a spin, then does so for real and slips. 10-9 Green.

135 lbs.: Jonathan Martinez vs. Frankie Saenz

Round 1: Saenz sends out some early right hands and scores a takedown against the fence. Martinez pops back up, takes some knees downstairs. One minute in. Martinez turns off the fence, gets put back on it. Good knee on the break. Two minutes in. Martinez tries a body kick, eats a low kick. Head kick attempts. Right hand connects behind a knee. Two minutes to go.

Saenz shoots, denied. Low kick from Martinez. Saenz leg kick. Martinez tries head and body kicks, catches Saenz coming in with a knee downstairs. More kicks from Martinez. One minute to go. Martinez with a knee to the body, looks for counters. Another knee to the body as Saenz tries to shoot. Martinez catches him with some heavy punches in the last few seconds. 10-9 Martinez.

Round 2: Martinez flicks out another high kick, lands a left hand and eats an overhand right in return. More head kicks from Martinez bounce off the forearm. Hard body kick answered in kind. Saenz trading with him, landing some punches. One minute in. Saenz answers a body kick with an overhand right, gets sprawled on and eats punches. Both go to the body, then a head kick wobbles Saenz. Martinez pursuing patiently, landing to the head and body. Two minutes in. Body kick to knee. Another snap kick downstairs. A head kick through the guard drops Saenz, who somehow survives the follow-up onslaught of left hands. Martinez catches a body kick, cracks him with a left hand as Saenz falls to his back. Knee from Martinez on the way up. Saenz tries to press forward with punches, gets cracked by another head kick. One minute to go. Counter uppercut catches Saenz trying to change levels. Two more stuffed takedowns. Another head kick and Saenz goes down again. Heavy punches, then elbows. Saenz manages to close his guard and hold on. 10-8 Martinez.

Round 3: Saenz’s corner needs to stop this.

Simultaneous kicks send a foot into Saenz’s jewels. Another head kick by Martinez. Saenz still trying to blitz in at times, but his enthusiasm gets him destroyed by a counter knee up the middle. A few more punches and it’s over.

Round 1: Munoz opens with some head kicks. Body kick lands for him. Overhand right, brief clinch. Maness lands a straight left. Hard counter right catches Munhoz throwing. One minute in. Munoz ducks a left hand and takes him to the fence, kneeing him in the cup in the process. They resume in the center. Munoz immediately kicks him in the junk again. Both try head kicks when they resume. Munoz fires an overhand right and shoots in, grabbing a body lock against the fence. Unsuccessful lift two minutes in. Another failed lift. The third one puts him on top in guard. Looking for side control, gets it with two minutes to go.

Short punches from Munoz. Looking to isolate an arm, moves to north-south in pursuit of a kimura. One minute to go. Good hammerfists and he takes the back. More hard shots, going from mount to the back and continuing to land. 10-9 Munoz.

Round 2: Maness comes out orthodox and denies the first takedown attempt. Left hook exchange. Right cross lands for Maness and another sprawl. Munoz briefly considers pulling guard, then puts him on the fence. One minute in. They separate. Maness answers a low kick with a 1-2 and Munoz changes levels for a single-leg attempt. Two minutes in. Maness reverses and lands some body shots. Munoz sporting a cut near his right eye, reverses in turn. Ref separates them with two minutes to go.

Counter right lands for Maness, who denies another shot. Jockeying for position on the fence. Body punches by Maness as he’s pressed against the cage. They separate with a minute to go. Maness tries a flying knee, doesn’t bite when Munoz pulls guard. Munoz ducks an uppercut for a high-amplitude takedown in the last 30 seconds. Maness throwing elbows off his back, gives up half guard. 10-9 Maness.

Round 3: Another low blow by Munoz catches Maness stepping in. Ref takes a point. Munoz immediately shoots, looks for a single-leg. Pressing Munoz on the fence a minute in. Some grinding. Two minutes in. Ref separates them. Maness comes out aggressively, sprawls on a shot and taken to the fence. Maness punching the body, Two minutes to go.

Munoz changes levels. Jockeying for position. Munoz looks for a single-leg, can’t get it. One minute to go. Maness gets double unders and reverses, gets reversed in turn, takes him down into guard. Munoz quickly looks for a triangle, then transitions to a calf slicer. Hard to score the last round. 9-9 with the point deduction.

145 lbs.: Jamall Emmers vs. Vincent Cachero

Round 1: Emmers sending out jabs and kicks to start. Cachero tries a body shot. Cachero low kick met with a combination. One minute in. Cachero cracks him with a right hand that appears to buzz Emmers, who responds with a series of Thai knees. Cachero right hand, Emmers knee. Body kick from Emmers. Cachero lands a low kick. Two minutes in. Emmers with a front kick downstairs, knocked off-balance while throwing a low kick and ties up. Emmers takes a knee to the jewels as they separate. Cachedro 1-2 met by a knee and punches. More heavy Emmers knees inside with two minutes to go.

Cachero still trading with him. Knee to the body and a double right hand by Emmers. Cachero lands a right cross and uppercut. Unable to take Emmers down after taking a knee. More knees with a minute to go. Cachero takes him to the fence, lands an elbow, gets drilled with more knees. Emmers hits a double-leg into half guard. Cachero regains guard before the bell. 10-9 Emmers.

Round 2: More combinations from Emmers. Cachero lands a pair of hard low kicks. Still pressuring, still getting picked off. Nice counter left hook though. Straight right through the guard. One minute in. Emmers cracks him with an uppercut a minute in. Both land straight rights, then Emmers unloads a lengthy combination near the fence. He grabs a rear waist lock, can’t get the lift but lands punches in turtle position. He takes Cachero to the fence two minutes in. Cachero tries an elbow on the break, fires punches in the clinch. Emmers sitting down on some big punches. Cachero landing his share of counters. Two minutes to go.

Right cross from Emmers, low kick by Cachero. Another Emmers right hand. Cachero avoids an uppercut. Both swing big in the center. One minute to go. Cachero answers a low kick with an uppercut, then walks into a double-leg. Emmers ends the round on top in guard. 10-9 Emmers.

Round 3: Emmers sending out some long punches, gets caught by a left hand in combination. Low kid lands. Emmers with another reactive level change, can’t get it. Second attempt gets him back on top in guard a minute in. He steps over into half guard. Two minutes in. Emmers trying to isolate an arm for a kimura, can’t get it, passes to side control. Cachero makes it to his feet and lands a knee as he’s taken to the fence. Cachero reverses, separates. Two minutes to go.

Emmers shoots, grabs a body lock as he takes Cachero back to the fence. Cachero gets an underhook and they trade knees before separating. Emmers body kick and reactive takedown nearly into side control. One minute to go. Emmers looks for the back as he stands, gets both hooks in. Looking for the RNC, mounts at the bell. 10-9 Emmers.

Final result: Emmers def. Cachero by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Chris Gutierrez vs. Cody Durden

Round 1: Durden light on his feet as Gutierrez feints low kicks. Low kick lands for Durden, checks the one in return. Durden looks for a single-leg and brings him down against the fence. One minute in. Gutierrez tries to stand and Durden immediately takes the back. Both hooks in, bopping Gutierrez with short punches. He goes palm-to-palm for a crank, nothing doing. Two minutes to go.

More of the same, Durden chipping away and hunting for the choke. He briefly flattens Gutierrez out with a minute to go. Gutierrez spins into guard before the bell. 10-9 Durden; not enough damage for a 10-8.

Round 2: Gutierrez lands a 1-2 and low kick. Durden right hand falls short. Durden fires a double-leg and hauls him to the fence. Gutierrez separates, lands a leg kick, denies another shot a minute in. Hard body shot from Gutierrez, who limp-legs out of a single and sprawls on another level change. He fires a knee as Durden stands and the foot catches him in the groin, prompting a lengthy pause. Gutierrez goes back to the low kick when they resume, keeping his jab in Durden’s face. Two minutes in. Durden with some jabs as he presses forward. Two minutes in. Durden answers a right cross with a jab. Double jab. Body hook and jabs by Gutierrez, then another hard leg kick. Two minutes to go.

Another leg kick met by a Durden body kick. Durden walks into a right cross. Gutierrez catches a kick, goes back to chopping away at the lead leg. Switch kick upstairs. One minute to go. Durden shoots, tries a foot sweep, and stays persistent as Gutierrez tries to limp-leg out. Gutierrez immediately wraps up an armbar as Durden lands in guard. Durden defends and waits it out. 10-9 Gutierrez.

Round 3: Early jab exchange, Durden low kick. Switch kick and low kick from Gutierrez. Durden shoots from too far out, denied and they trade. Trading jabs in the center a minute in. Gutierrez takes a kick to the cup that makes an unfortunate noise but doesn’t seem to hurt him much. Straight left when they resume. Durden low kicks. Brazilian kick from Gutierrez. Oblique kick. Two minutes in. Gutierrez tries a spinning back kick. Durden shoots, denied, takes a right hand downstairs. Gutierrez with an elbow and low kick. Durden lands a left, shoots, enied. Gutierrez digs another hook to the body, tries to limp-leg out, and cracks Durden while on one leg for a knockdown. Durden manages to stay attached and stand before separating. Right hand to the body and leg kick by Gutierrez with a minute to go. Body kick. Hard knee knocks Durden to his back. Durden tries to sit up into a takedown, accepts guard. Gutierrez lands some punches, then tries a rolling thunder whatsit at the bell. 10-9 Gutierrez.
