Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 83 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Dec. 9, 2023), streaming LIVE on ESPN+. UFC Vegas 83 will be headlined by the 135-pound showdown between bantamweight bruisers Song Yadong vs. Chris Gutierrez, with a potential spot in the division Top 10 up for grabs. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, former 205-pound title challenger, Anthony Smith, steps up on short notice to battle light heavyweight wrecking ball, Khalil Rountree Jr., in UFC Vegas 83’s co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, lightweight mainstays Nasrat Haqparast and Jamie Mullarkey hook ‘em up at 155 pounds, not long after Andre Muniz and Jun Yong Park collide at bantamweight.

135 lbs.: Song Yadong vs. Chris Gutierrez

Round 1: Gutierrez keeping his distance, looking to keep Song at bay with kicks. Low kick from Song, Gutierrez tries to spin. Song whiffs a spinning back fist a minute in, eats a calf kick in return. Overhand right falls short, as does a spinning back fist. Low kick exchange two minutes in. Gutierrez continuing to target that lead calf. Both firing low kicks. Two minutes to go.

Continuing to chew up each other’s legs. 2-3 from Song on the counter. Gutierrez tries a spinning back fist, eats a pair of hard calf kicks. Song 2-3 falls just short with a minute to go, low kick lands clean. Simultaneous low kicks, Song gets the better of it. Body kick at the bell. 10-9 Song.

Round 2: Gutierrez potshotting with kicks, lands a front kick to the face that draws a smile. Spinning back fist just misses. Another glancing front kick. Song tries to explode in, can’t land the flurry. Trading low kicks. Song falls short with punches a minute in, lands a leg kick soon after. Heavy calf kick by Gutierrez spins him around. Song punches his way in and lands a leg kick two minutes in. Again. Gutierrez controlling the range better this round, does so with an eye poke. Back to piling up the kicks and avoiding punches when they resume. Two minutes to go.

Song changes levels and spins him down with a single-leg. Gutierrez trying to use butterfly hooks, but gets stuck in guard. Overhook control for Gutierrez with a minute to go. He’s also grabbing the glove to make it easier for himself, prompting the ref to break them up and tell him off. Song unloads some heavy right hands at the bell and Gutierrez gets pissy at the ref for not breaking them up. 10-9 Song.

Round 3: Song punches into the clinch, avoids a ninja choke, and cracks Gutierrez with a hard combination. Gutierrez steps in with a knee and this time it’s him getting eye poked. He takes a bit to recover, then spams kicks for a bit. Hard low kick from Song, body shot behind it. One minute in. Gutierrez flicks out front kicks with both legs. Wheel kick whiffs. Low kicks connect. Song answers in kind. Oblique kick two minutes in. He’s keeping Song at bay with these, though not doing much visible damage. Song to the body, trying to pressure. Good low kick. Two minutes to go.

Song bites on a fake level change. Gutierrez constantly landing light kicks to keep Song from stepping in. Song backs him to the fence and lands a solid combo. Hard low kick. One minute to go. Lead right. Combination just misses, low kick does not. Song tries a wheel kick. Gutierrez tries a head kick, then a body kick, which Song catches to take him down into guard. 10-9 Gutierrez.

Round 4: Glancing front kick kick by Gutierrez. Song backs him up with a combination. 1-1-2 and down goes Gutierrez. Song swarms, forces him down with a front headlock, and avoids a potential triangle to settle on top in guard. Short punches from Song. Solid elbow. Two minutes in. Gutierrez not doing much besides holding him tight at the moment. Song continuing to chip away. Two minutes to go.

Gutierrez briefly considers some sort of triangle. Song lands some heavy right hands and Gutierrez complains it’s to the back of the head despite being the one who’s turning his head. Elbows and punches by Song with a minute to go. He continues doing damage until the bell. 10-9 Song.

Round 5: Gutierrez goes for an Imanari roll, doesn’t even get close, and ends up in bottom half guard. Back to full. One minute in. Short punches from Song. Solid elbows two minutes in. More punches and elbows as Gutierrez does nothing to attack off his back or stand. Two minutes to go.

More good shots from Song, who briefly gets half guard. Nasty elbows. One minute to go. Song continuing to do damage. Hammerfists. Gutierrez considers attacking a leg, eats more bombs until the bell. 10-9 Song.

205 lbs.: Anthony Smith vs. Khalil Rountree

Round 1: Smith advancing, Rountree circling. Straight left from Rountree. Smith low kick met by straight lefts. Nice right from Smith a minute in. They tie up and Rountree puts him on the fence. Hard elbow by Rountree on the exit two minutes in. 2-3 lands for him. Body kick from Smith. Low kick. 2-1 by Rountree. Low kick by Smith, body kick behind it. Two minutes to go.

Tit-for-tat so far. Solid left by Smith. Good jab. Hard low kick from Rountree, then a counter two-piece. Straight left through the guard. Lead right lands for Smith. One minute to go. Body kick to left cross by Rountree, who eats a counter right and then dings Smith with a straight left. Heavy counter 1-2 freezes Smith for a moment and Rountree wings some haymakers in the final seconds. 10-9 Rountree.

Round 2: Nasty body kick from Rountree. He puts Smith on the fence and they trade big elbows. Smith gets the better of it and goes to work with combinations. Smith fires a straight right and a counter hook fries his circuits for a second. Smith tries a single-leg and eats some heavy shots for it. He seems to have his wits back as he goes back to walking Rountree down. 1-2 from Rountree. Check hook lands again two minutes in. Jab from Smith, counter two-piece comes back at him. More lefts by Rountree, low kick behind them. Smith cracks him with a body kick. Two minutes to go.

Rountree straight left, then a stiff jab. Head kick attempt. Another cracking check hook from him. Smith is matching him in volume but not in impact. One minute to go. Smith tries a head kick and straight right. Nice 1-2. Straight left by Rountree. Smith body kick and straight right. 10-9 Rountree.

Round 3: Another heavy body kick from Rountree. Smith still trying to pressure but getting picked off with power shots. An uppercut and straight left have Smith jittering like he touched the third rail and Rountree cocks a hammerfist as Smith boogies his way to the floor, but the ref waves it off when it’s clear Smith is cooked.

Final result: Rountree def. Smith by TKO (punches)


155 lbs.: Nasrat Haqparast vs. Jamie Mullarkey

Round 1: Trading hands to start. One minute in. Haqparast to the body. Again. Body kick, then an overhand left that floors Mullarkey. Haqparast hammers him with a few dozen left hands to force the stoppage.

Final result: Haqparast def. Mullarkey by TKO (punches)


135 lbs.: Sumudaerji vs. Tim Elliott

Round 1: Hard straight left from Sumudaerji, then another soon after. Elliott taunting as Sumudaerji circles. Low kick and straight left from Sumudaerji. Glancing overhand left by Elliott in return. One minute in. Elliott pops him with a quick jab, eats a body shot. Elliott catches a head kick and tries a treetop takedown, but settles for cracking Sumudaerji with a left hook on the exit. Hard combo from Sumudaerji. Elliott shoots in for a low single and lands a short elbow before running the pipe two minutes in. Full guard for Elliott. He soon passes to side control and looks for short elbows. Front headlock with two minutes to go.

Short shots from Elliott set up an arm triangle, and after a quick pass to the opposite side control, he’s got it locked up. The squeeze is enough to send a rocket of blood flying from Sumudaerji’s nose and put him to sleep.

Final result: Elliott def. Sumudaerji by technical submission (arm triangle choke)


185 lbs.: Andre Muniz vs. Jun Yong Park

Round 1: Low kick from Park to start. Muniz with a solid head kick. Body kick. One minute in. Spinning back kick attempt. He changes levels and completes a double-leg against the fence. Looking for the back. Park works to his feet, gets pulled back down. Seatbelt grip from Muniz. Park stands again two minutes in, gets pulled down, stands again. Muniz holding onto the rear body lock. Park blatantly grabs the fence as he’s taken down to his seat. Two minutes to go.

Park stands again, gets dragged to his knees away from the fence. Back mount for Muniz. Park nearly turns into top guard with a minute to go, can’t do so. He does on the second try, avoiding a triangle, and takes mount soon after. Heavy elbows from Park. He blasts away from half guard until the bell. 10-9 Park.

Round 2: Park on the front foot. Solid punches from Muniz. Park walking through them and sprawls on a long-range double-leg, but Muniz quickly scrambles into top position. Park gets to his knees and Muniz takes his back a minute in. Back to the hand fighting. Park gets to his knees two minutes in, eating punches. Now to his feet, Muniz playing backpack. Nice scramble, Muniz staying attached as Park tries to scoot away. Mat return, back control again. Two minutes to go.

Short punches landing for Muniz. Park tries to sit out, can’t separate. Park works to a knee with a minute to go, gets pulled down to both. Back up to his feet, muscled back down. 10-9 Muniz.

Round 3: Body shot and combos from Park. Muniz changes levels and takes him down at the base of the fence. Back up, back down a minute in. Body triangle for Muniz. Two minutes in. Park spins into guard and drops a hard right hand. Nice sweep from Muniz and they return to the feet with two minutes to go.

Muniz shoots and Park sprawls on him before taking top guard. Solid punches from Park. One minute to go. Elbows landing. He ends the fight pounding. 10-9 Park.

Final result: Muniz def. Park by split decision


170 lbs.: Kevin Jousset vs. Song Kenan

Round 1: Side kick from Song to start. Jousset low kick. Both standing tall and keeping their distance. Trading low kicks. One minute in. Both targeting the calf. Jousset body kick, then a good calf kick. Solid left hook from Song two minutes in. Jousset continuing to eat up that calf. Jab exchange. 1-2 just misses for Song. Two minutes to go.

Front kicks from Jousset. Solid straight left lands for Song. They trade in close. Calf kick exchange. Stiff jabs by Jousset, who answers an uppercut with a 1-2. One minute to go. Hard counter right from Jousset, solid clinch knee. Double jab catches Song coming in. They keep trading jabs and Jousset’s is clearly heavier. Song tries to rush in the waning seconds. 10-9 Jousset.

Round 2: Song trying to walk him down as Jousset pumps out jabs. Overhand right lands for Song, clinch knee from Jousset in return. Sneaky jab by Jousset. Low kicks and he matadors away from Song’s combo. That jab is controlling the fight a minute in. As I say that, Song buzzes him with a 1-2, prompting a brief clinch. Hard lead right by Song and a body kick behind it. Jousset goes low-high, lands clinch uppercuts. More jabs two minutes in. Counter elbow. He ties up and lands another solid uppercut. Trading straight punches. Two minutes to go.

2-3 from Jousset, low kick behind it. Straight right lands for Song but he’s getting outworked. They trade in the center. Song barrels in with right hands and lands a solid elbow. Trading in the clinch. More jabs by Jousset with a minute to go, then a swatting right hand that Song answers with a 1-2. Jousset changes levels for a double-leg, can’t quite finish it. Nice little sequence by Song in the center. Calf kick visibly stings Song, who lands some heavy shots in return. 10-9 Jousset.

Round 3: More jabs and low kicks from Jousset. Clinch knee. Calf kicks a minute in. He’s not putting a ton behind them but they just never stop. Brief clinch. Song’s left leg is compromised and he goes southpaw. Jousset just starts kicking the other one instead. Slip 1-2 by Jousset. Another short clinch. Two minutes in. Jousset punches into the clinch and lands a hard elbow. Song lands a sneaky elbow inside but there’s no power left in his shots. Jousset hauls him to the fence. Two minutes to go.

Combinations from Jousset on the exit. Song tries to shoot, gets tripped to the mat, pops back up. One minute to go. Jousset looking for a single-leg against the fence. Song manages to separate and sit down on some solid shots in the last 20 seconds. 10-9 Jousset.

125 lbs.: Hyun Sung Park vs. Shannon Ross

Round 1: Ross answers a low kick with a combo. Jabs from Park, who avoids an overhand right. Inside low kick catches Ross in the cup, but he’s quick to recover. Another stiff jab and low kick from Park. Another jab, then he catches Ross on the exit with a hard straight right. Ross goes for a flying knee and Park ties up, then blasts him with an elbow a minute in. Ross walks into some outstretched fingers. Park slips on a body kick. Hard calf kick by Ross. Superman punch and overhand right. Two minutes in. Hard jab catches Ross on one leg and sends him to the mat, where Park settles on top in half guard. Park moves to mount and hammers him with elbows before taking the back. Body triangle secured. Looking for the RNC. Two minutes to go.

Ross rolling as Park alternates between hunting the choke and dropping punches. Nice elbow by Park, more punches. Looking to squeeze a minute in, drops it and lands an elbow instead. Ross survives. 10-8 Park.

Round 2: Flurry from Ross, uppercut from Park. Ross lands a counter right, eats one in return. Trading in center cage. Things slow a bit as the first minute ends. As soon as I type that, they trade and a left hook hurts Ross again. Ross quickly gets his wits back, prompting Park to put him on the fence and fire knees. Elbows and knees from Park on the break. Ross potshotting at range. Two minutes in. Cross counter from Park, who avoids a 1-1-2 but eats the 1-2 behind it. Nice exchange, both land well. Right cross by Ross. Park trying to walk him down, trading jabs. Two minutes to go.

Low kicks working for Ross. Ross body jab met by a counter elbow, overhand right from him in return. Superman punch met by a stiff jab from Park. Sneaky body kick by Park, then a liver shot. The next liver shot folds Ross in half and Park swarms, pounding him out at the base of the fence.

Final result: Park def. Ross by TKO (punches)


155 lbs.: Melquizael Costa vs. Steve Garcia

Round 1: Long 1-2 lands for Garcia, who checks a leg kick. He overextends and Costa ties up, looking for the back. Trying to slip in a second hook. Costa hits a takedown, but can’t keep him down. One minute in. Costa keeping the rear body lock as Garcia fights his hands. Knees to the butt. Two minutes in. Costa keeps trying to slip in the hooks but just can’t do so. Costa wrenches him down, still can’t keep him there. Two minutes to go.

Garcia avoiding the back take but can’t escape. Another brief mat return by Costa. One minute to go. This continues until the bell, when Costa lands a big elbow. 10-9 Costa.

Round 2: Garcia charges after Costa with huge shots, prompting Costa to take him down. Garcia quickly sweeps, cracks him with a knee on the way up, then floors him with a combo. Costa doing everything he can to survive as Garcia beats the brakes off of him. Garcia switches to a rear naked choke, then hammers Costa with a series of terrifying elbows to send the ref into action. Costa’s so out of it he’s trying to hit a single-leg on the ref as Garcia celebrates.

Final result: Garcia def. Costa by KO (elbows)


135 lbs.: Stephanie Egger vs. Luana Santos

Round 1: Egger pressuring, Santos looking to keep her at bay with straight shots. 1-2 from Santos, who tries to flurry a minute in. Lead right from Egger, Santos latches onto her glove, and they have to pause a moment to deal with a wardrobe malfunction. Body shots from Santos. She’s sloppy but Egger’s a step behind anyway. Two minutes in. Egger clinches up and Santos puts her on the fence, briefly considering a throw. Knees from Santos. Two minutes to go.

Santos continuing to grind against the fence. Egger grabs double overhooks and looks for knees. Egger with the better knees at the moment. One minute to go. Ref wants more action. Santos tries a throw, no dice, continues to grind. 10-9 Santos.

Round 2: Egger goes back to plodding after Santos. She throws herself off-balance on a whiffed punch and eats a knee on the way up. Egger wades into the clinch and puts her on the fence. They trade knees before separating a minute in. Body kick from Santos. Egger pressuring, lands an ugly right, eats one in return. Decent jab, nice flurry. Santos tries a throw and puts her on the fence. Two minutes in. Knees from Egger. Santos muscles her down into side control and looks for the back as Egger rises. Back elbow by Egger. Two minutes to go.

Egger tries to get the Thai clinch, settles for kneeing the body. She exits with a body kick. Nice jab. One minute to go. Santos looking tired. They trade jabs and Egger tries to follow with a right. Big uppercut from Egger kicks off a combination, most of which lands clean. Santos puts her on the fence. Elbow from Egger. 10-9 Egger.

Round 3: Egger walking her down as usual. Lead right and jab from Santos. They trade in the clinch and Santos hits a head-and-arm throw into scarf hold. Egger trying to take her back, makes it to her feet a minute in and puts her on the fence. Santos lands some knees and reverse. Egger trying to attack while smushed against the fence. Two minutes in. Short knees from Santos. Ref breaks them up and Santos looks completely exhausted. Santos still punching but Egger’s putting together some volume. Two minutes to go.

Egger pauses her stalking to stare at her for a second, then Santos puts her on the fence again. Knees to the thigh from Santos. One minute to go. Ref breaks them up again. Santos wades back into the clinch and Egger gets a body lock, looking for the back. One hook in. Egger hunts for the choke and lands strikes until the bell. 10-9 Egger.

Final result: Santos def. Egger by unanimous decision


125 lbs.: Carlos Hernandez vs. Tatsuro Taira

Round 1: Lots of feints from both sides. Taira slips and Hernandez tries to jump on him, but Taira hits a deep half guard sweep to kick off a wild scramble. It ends with Hernandez pressing Taira against the fence a minute in. He tries to heave Taira to the mat and somehow contrives to land in bottom side control. Two minutes in. Hernandez regains half guard, Taira immediately trying to pass to mount, denied. Solid elbow from Taira. To mount he goes, looking for the arm triangle. Two minutes to go.

Taira still trying to set up the arm triangle, then postures to drop punches. Now the back, flattening Hernandez out. Nice elbow as Hernandez tries to scramble, then looking for the RNC with the body triangle. One minute to go. Hernandez doing everything he can to try and scramble but Taira’s riding beautifully, pounding away as Hernandez works to free himself. Booming right hand by Taira after getting caught in half guard. One more for the road. 10-9 Taira.

Round 2: 1-2 from Taira. Hernandez trying to pressure. Massive lead right from Taira and Hernandez short-circuits. Taira jumps on him and swarms with a vicious barrage, forcing the ref into action and leaving Hernandez with a bloody mask.

Final result: Taira def. Hernandez by TKO (punches)


115 lbs.: Talita Alencar vs. Rayanne Amanda

Round 1: Alencar flicks out some kicks, then tries a single-leg that Amanda defends. Solid lead right by Alencar. One minute in. Big right hand from Amanda as they exchange. Two right hands by Amanda land back to back. 1-2. Two minutes in. Low kick lands for Alencar, her first clean shot in a while. Alencar ducks a left hand and looks for a single-leg, then switches to a body lock. Amanda reverses against the fence and eats a knee on the break. Both whiff with big swings. Amanda catches a body kick and both land well before separating. Amanda 1-1-2 with two minutes to go.

Sharp 1-2 by Amanda and Alencar’s got a mouse under her left eye. Two more big winging rights, then another. Alencar forces her back with a 1-2. Big counter right from Amanda kicks off a combo and she follows with an overhand right. One minute to go. Left hook from Alencar to end a long lull. She shoots, lands a knee, eats punches on the break. Amanda marching after her and swinging heat. Flurry lands in the final seconds and a flying knee just misses at the bell. 10-9 Amanda.

Round 2: Alencar slips throwing a kick, then butt-scoots after Amanda, who lets her up. Alencar looking for kicks. One minute in. Long lull in the action. Low kick from Amanda, 1-2 behind it. They trade in the center, neither lands clean. Two minutes in and it’s a sparring match so far. They trade in the center. Alencar punches her way into the clinch. Knees to the thigh against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Alencar trips her down into half guard after a bit. Looking for the kimura with a minute to go. She abandons it and stands over Amanda, who fires upkicks. Hard right hands from Alencar piling up. 10-9 Alencar.

Round 3: Alencar on the front foot. Counter right lands for Amanda, who denies a level change. One minute in. Alencar falls short with some punches. Alencar ducks a right hand and takes Amanda to the fence, but Amanda shoves her off and lands a looping haymaker on the break. Two minutes in. Both whiff with flurries. Clean counter right by Amanda. Amanda whiffs big on an overhand right and Alencar lets out a war cry. Alencar shoots again, denied again with two minutes to go.
