Frankie Edgar came up short in his bid to dethrone Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight champion, Max Holloway, last Saturday night (July 27, 2019) at UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (recap).

While a crucial blow to his championship aspirations at 145 pounds, the former Lightweight champion says losing to a champion such as Holloway is the only thing that somewhat eases the agony of defeat. Which is a testament to Edgar’s respect for “Blessed” as a person.

“I took a day to travel home and sulk in my sorrows and while my heart is still broken I’m still proud of my performance,” wrote Edgar on Instagram.

“I will never be ok with losing but I take solace into losing to a man like Max, a true champion that represents himself, his family, and our sport like no other. I can take this loss like a man and show my children that failing and getting knocked down is ok just as long as we get back to our feet to fight again.”

After his loss to Max, Frankie alluded to the fact that perhaps size does in fact matter sometimes in the fight game. And while he was hesitant to commit to a drop down to Bantamweight right away, his journey is still far from done.

“I’m far from done but right now I just want to enjoy my family. Thanks to my team for always having me prepared to the fullest, getting ready for Max was a daunting task but yet they had me ready,” he added.

“Thank you to all the fans for their outpouring of love and support through out my career. And special thanks to my Family and my Wife for being my backbone and letting me know what is truly important in this life of mine. Till the next time…

Edgar is 0-3 in title fights at 145 pounds, which means another championship bout in that weight class will be hard to come by given the fact that there are several other contenders waiting in the wings.

While a drop down to 135 pounds seems like the logical step, Edgar will take some much-needed time before he makes a decision. As for Holloway, he already has his next opponent lined up, as he will likely face Alexander Volkanovski in his next title defense, perhaps in a few short months.

As long as doctors give him the go-ahead, of course.
