UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold finally won UFC gold with his impressive vicious beatdown of Chris Weidman in the co-main event of December’s UFC 194, but since that day much has come out about the health of both fighters.
Rockhold revealed that he had a staph infection that required him to be on antibiotics that significantly sapped his energy levels, while Weidman eventually came out with the news that he fought with a broken foot that caused his lackluster performance.
Now that a rematch is slated for June’s UFC 199 but without a date and location as of yet, Rockhold is ready to ramp up the trash talk again. He doesn’t believe the oft-injured Weidman’s excuses, and he called the the whole ordeal a joke in an interview with Bloody Elbow:
“The rematch is set – me and Weidman – I believe UFC 199, should be in June, June 4th or something. I think it’s a joke. Obviously they know my situation, I came in with an infection, I was on antibiotics, and I still whooped his ass.”
Rockhold then offered his prediction for the rematch, proclaiming that it won’t be as close as the first:
“Like I said to the managers just now, Weidman goes down in two. Half of the time, I almost feel bad about this one.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Rockhold can stop the former champ once again or if Weidman’s injury truly did play a big part in his loss. Either way, the rivalry between these two world-class middleweights might not end at UFC 199 regardless of what happens. Who are you picking to win the rematch?
