Marshmallow’s are normally big, fluffy, and soft. Three adjectives not normally used to describe ex-marine, MMA fighters, that are Nova Uniao black belts. Well Victory FC55 Co-Main Event fighter Derek “Marshamallow” Bohi welcomes his nickname with open arms because of the unwritten rule, “…you can’t pick your own nickname…”. After years fighting, in the cage and overseas, Derek Bohi is ready to make a statement in the Heavyweight division. Derek fights Daniel Gallemore in the CO-Main Event at Victory FC55 in Topeka, KS live on UFC Fight Pass.
There is always a story behind how a fighter earned a nickname. Derek’s story doesn’t dissapoint, “…when i started training with them for like the first 3 months, I was just ‘Hey you fat guy’. It was just ‘Hey, you fat guy come here.’ ‘Hey you fat guy mop the floor.’ ‘Hey you fat guy I want to show a move, come here’….They were all laughing and pointing at me and I was like, I know I cant fight these guy but if I have to go get a bat and come back. These guys are all laughing at me, I want to know what the hell’s going on. Ninja was kinda explaining, ‘O, your wearing that white gi and your so big and fat, you look like the marshmallow from ghostbusters’…”
Derek is the type of guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously but can compete with any Heavyweight in the world on any given night. Listen to the full interview to hear Derek talk more about becoming a Nova Uniao blackbelt, how he got his team’s name, and how much longer he thinks he can fight professionally. Make sure to tune in to Derek’s Heavyweight title fight live on UFC Fight Pass this Friday December, 23rd live from Topeka, KS.
