Top ranked welterweight Stephen Thompson is hoping to get a fight with Leon Edwards. So much so that he’s even willing to go so far as a Twitter callout.

Who doesn’t remember their first time? The lights low, the soft glow of a computer screen, the breathless exhilaration as fingers dance over keys in unfamiliar patterns. It’s impossible to walk away from that moment unchanged. When a fighter has called out their first opponent on Twitter, the world takes on a whole new aspect. As though the skies parted and God’s grace shown down anew and blessed their very existence.

Or so I’ve been told.

Stephen Thompson hasn’t been seen in the cage since picking up a unanimous decision win over Vicente Luque back at UFC 244 in November of 2019. That victory broke a two loss streak, coming on the heels of Anthony Pettis’ remarkable comeback KO over ‘Wonderboy’ in March of that same year. Thompson broke both hands in his win over Luque, and while he avoided surgery for the injuries they likely explain his long layoff from competition.

Similarly sidelined, Leon Edwards hasn’t stepped in the Octagon since beating former lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos in July of 2019. Edwards was tied to a bout with Tyron Woodley for march of this year but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Edwards has been campaigning for fights with Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, and champion Kamaru Usman over the past several months. But none of those bouts seem to have gotten a serious push from the UFC.

Now that Thompson is once again ready for action, it just may be that he’s in the right place at the right time to give Edwards a chance to once again prove he’s among the world’s best at 170 lbs.
